You might be familiar with the Leica brand being the gold standard for many photographers and photojournalists, but for this bunch of Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) students, they’ve been working with Leica-branded cameras too—the ones on the back of the Xiaomi 13T that is.
That’s because Xiaomi had collaborated with UiTM and their Department of Creative Photomedia to organise a photography experience for these tertiary students. Part of the global Xiaomi Education initiative, selected students were given a photography assignment and handed the Xiaomi 13T series of smartphones that were co-engineered with Leica. Following that, the UiTM students then got to show it all off in an exhibition.
The assignment itself was titled ‘Celebrating the Essence of Malaysia: Exploring Cultural Diversity and Individual Stories Through Environmental Portraiture’, and contributed towards their actual course work. Together with their Xiaomi 13T series devices, these students went around to snap their portraits and the top three students were also given awards from Xiaomi Malaysia. In total, the partnership between Xiaomi and UiTM was worth up to RM65,000 in industrial grant.
Here are just some of the best shots taken being shown off at the photography exhibition as a result of the Xiaomi and UiTM collaboration:
“This collaboration served as an educational canvas, enabling 24 students to immerse themselves in the thematic realm of environmental portraiture. The outcomes were nothing short of remarkable, with each image a testament to both the students’ creative prowess and the capabilities of mobile photography.
This collaboration underscored the notion that exceptional imagery isn’t solely confined to high-end equipment but instead emphasizes the role of accessible tools, like Xiaomi smartphones, in nurturing creative expression.
By embracing these tools, educational institutes can empower students to navigate the artistry of photography without financial barriers and limitations, fostering a deeper connection between technology, creativity, and education.”- Ts. Mohd Shariful Hafizal, Coordinator Program at the Creative Photomedia Department, UiTM College of the Creative Arts
