Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) has announced a recall over a Takata Airbag issue which affects several models in Malaysia. According to the carmaker, a total of 6,671 vehicles produced between 2010 and 2014 have been identified to undergo inspection under the recall in Malaysia.

Volkswagen Airbag Recall in Malaysia

The Volkswagen Airbag recall affects the following models in Malaysia:

  • 6th generation Golf GTI (2010-2013)
  • Eos (2010-2013)
  • Passat CC (2010-2013)
  • Polo (2010-2013)
  • Beetle (2012 to 2014)
  • Vento (2010-2013)

VPCM said, “The concern with the front driver airbag housing generator is caused by deterioration of the generator’s propellant due to high air humidity and temperature fluctuations over a long period of time. This could lead to potential injury on the driver and passenger.”

The brand said it has taken the necessary steps with its dealer partners to ensure parts availability and that the recall is conducted as smoothly and efficiently as possible. The nationwide recall will be carried out in phases to manage the number of cases. The identified customers affected by the recall will be notified by email and WhatsApp based on the Volkswagen database. Customers who have purchased the affected vehicle from a previous owner or a used car dealership are urged to contact the nearest Volkswagen-authorised dealer for verification.

If a part replacement is required, Volkswagen said all labour and replacement parts for this service will be at no cost to the owner.

Check if your VW is affected by Airbag Recall

To find out if your VW vehicle is affected by the Airbag recall, VPCM has a special section on its website that users can visit. All you’ll need is to visit the Service Action section, select Volkswagen Airbag Recall (69EJ) and then enter the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). The VIN can be found on the bottom left of the vehicle’s front windscreen and it usually starts with “WVW”, “WVG” or “PPV”.

If your vehicle is affected, you are urged to make an immediate appointment with a Volkswagen dealer near you.
