Even though it has been in operation for the past several weeks, it is only today that Tesla has officially announced the opening of the Tesla Supercharger in Sunway Pyramid. Located near the shopping mall’s main entrance, it is the first Supercharger site in Selangor according to Tesla Malaysia.
It is a rather interesting statement since technically, the state’s first Supercharger site is Tesla Centre Cyberjaya. Hence, this means that Tesla is still limiting the Supercharger in Cyberjaya for internal usage, just like what we learned during its launch event last month.
Sunway Pyramid is the third public Supercharger spot in Malaysia after Pavilion KL and Sunway Big Box Johor. With the launch today, there are now 16 Superchargers in the country although the number will grow very soon as there are another four Superchargers expected to go live very soon at the Freeport A’Famosa Outlet in Melaka.
So far, Tesla is still using the V3 Supercharger setup for the Malaysian market. With a peak charging speed of 250kW, these Superchargers allow a Tesla Model 3 to obtain up to 282km of range within 15 minutes.
Of course, do note that your Tesla might not be able to get the full 250kW charging rate all the time. Meanwhile, the Supercharging fee for Sunway Pyramid is still similar to the previous two locations which is RM1.25 per kWh.
As usual, there is also an idle fee involved if you leave your Tesla connected to the Supercharger even though it has been fully charged. This idle fee would kick in at RM2.00 per minute when the site is 50% occupied while it would be increased to RM4.00 per minute if the occupancy rate is 100%.
Aside from charging and idle fees, there is also an additional parking fee of RM5 per hour when you use any of the Superchargers at Sunway Pyramid. This didn’t come as a surprise to us though as all four Superchargers are located at the valet parking section of the shopping mall although since the site is open 24 hours, it is unclear whether the valet operator is still going to collect the fee outside of the mall’s official operating hours.
In conjunction with the official launch, Tesla has also taken the opportunity to showcase Model 3 and Model Y at Sunway Pyramid. You can have a closer look at both of these EVs near the Water Feature Area of the mall’s Ground Floor from now until 12 November 2023.
