[ UPDATE 12/10/2023 09:27 ]: Affected customers are advised not to head to the airport. MYairline’s sales office and counters at KLIA2 were closed, while there were no staff present when we visited the airport this morning.

Local low-cost carrier, MYAirline has ceased its operations effective immediately, less than a year after it began flying customers to select domestic destinations. The airline cites financial difficulties as the reason behind the abrupt suspension.

While MYAirline said that it is working to resume operations as soon as possible, it is not able to commit to any set timeline. There was no mention of refunds in the statement that was published on social media at 5:30 AM today and the company has asked customers to send their enquiries to its generic Customer Care e-mail address.

“The airline has come to this extremely painful decision because of significant financial pressures that have made it necessary to suspend operations pending the shareholder restructuring and recapitalization of the airline.

We deeply regret and apologize for having to make this decision as we understand the impact it will have on our loyal passengers, dedicated employees and partners. We have worked tirelessly to explore various partnership and capital raising options to prevent this suspension. Unfortunately, the constraints of time have left us with no alternative but to take this decision.” – MYAirline

The suspension came just four days after the airline announced the departure of its CEO Rayner Teo who left the company apparently due to health reasons. The airline’s Chief Operating Officer Stuart Cross has since assumed Rayner’s place as the interim CEO.

In a statement announcing the departure of Rayner, MYAirline said that its operations “remain steadfast” and is apparently finalizing several strategic partnerships with unnamed partners. Ironically, the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) has extended the carrier’s Air Operator Certificate (AOC) for another 24 months on the following day.

Hence, the sudden suspension may have blindsided many out there. This is especially MYAirline customers who are now left to find alternative travel arrangements by themselves.
