Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil has said once again that the Chief Executive Officer of Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) will be announced soon. He said this during a press conference at Malaysia Digital Expo (MDX 2023).
As reported by Bernama, Fahmi said “I have notified all the CEOs of mobile network operators (MNOs) about finalising the share subscription agreement signing, hopefully within next week if everything goes well.”
He added that they will inform the media when the signing will take place after all telcos have taken up their equity either during or just after signing. The minister shared that the 5G Task Force chairpersons Treasury Secretary-general Datuk Johan Mahmood Merican and Communications and Digital Secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa will oversee the final aspects before the signing is carried out.
Despite the government’s announcement to transition from a Single Wholesale network to a Dual Network, Fahmi said in July that all 5 telcos are going all-in with DNB by taking up an equity stake in DNB. Prior to this, TM, Celcom and Digi have announced the termination of their share subscription agreements as the long-stop date to fulfil the conditions have lapsed.
Before the Merdeka Day celebration, Fahmi said DNB will be announcing a new CEO while the major telcos will sign their respective share subscription agreement to take a stake in the single wholesale network. A month has passed and no announcements have been made so far.
As of the end of August 2023, DNB’s 5G network has achieved 68.8% population coverage. It aims to achieve 80% 5G population coverage by the end of 2023 before a second 5G network is established.
