Honor V Purse is now official – lightest large-screen foldable and it costs less than RM4,000 in China

Remember the prototype phone Honor revealed at the recent IFA 2023 in Berlin? Well, they actually did it and made it a commercial product. The Honor V Purse can now be purchased in a limited pre-sale campaign in China for a low price of CNY 6,000 (about RM 3,853).

With the official availability, we get a full specs list. At the heart of the phone is the Snapdragon 778G – the same chip in the recently launched Honor 50. It is paired with 16GB of RAM, and comes in either 256GB or 512GB of internal storage.

It is the measurements of the phone that intrigued us. At 156.5 x 74.7 x 8.6mm folded, The phone is slightly taller and wider than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5. At 214 grams, it is also 40 grams lighter than the Z Fold 5. Honor managed to take the Huawei Mate Xs design, and trim it down to make it a bit smaller, but more importantly lighter (the Mate Xs was 300 grams by comparison). They even managed to beat the Honor Magic Vs in weight – the Magic Vs is 47 grams heavier than the V Purse.

Because this is an outward folding phone, there is only a single screen. Honor chose to use a 7.71” OLED panel with 2,348 x 2,016 pixels with a 10.5:9 aspect ratio. The screen becomes a 6.45” display (2,348 x 1,088px, 19.4:9) when folded. The panel is a 10-bit panel with DCI-P3 colours and 1,600 nits peak brightness with a refresh rate of 90Hz.

Imaging is a bit traditional – the main sensor is a 50MP f/1.9 module, matched with a 12MP ultra-wide module. For selfies, an 8MP camera is used. The advantage of having an outward screen is when it is unfolded, the rear camera can also be used for selfies and video calls.

Running everything is a 4,500mAh battery, which is more than the thicker Z Fold 5 which has 4,400mAh. No super-fast charging, just 35W right out of the box.

We have shown the gimmick of the Purse in the previous article here, but in a nutshell, you can attach a chain to it and turn it into, well, a purse. You can’t slip in cash inside, but you can customise the looks with a variety of Always On Display styles to match your outfit of the day.

Honor V Purse is on a limited preorder campaign right now in China, available in two prices – the 16GB/256GB version costs CNY 6,000 (about RM 3,853) while the 16GB/512GB version costs CNY 6,600 (about RM 4,238). It will be available in Gold, Blue or Black and will start shipping come 26 September
