While it was not mentioned during today’s Wonderlust launch event, Apple has released the official USB-C to Lightning Adapter. The purpose of this dongle was quite clear which is to allow future iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro owners to continue using their favourite Lightning-based accessories.
After all, Apple has been using the proprietary Lightning connector for the past 11 years, starting with the iPhone 5. For loyal iPhone users out there, it is quite likely that you may have amassed several Lightning-based accessories over the years.
According to the listing on Apple Malaysia’s online store, the new USB-C to Lightning Adapter is designed to enable three key functions including charging, data, and audio. The support document for the adapter further revealed that it is able to provide up to 24W of power when used to charge iPhone 15 or iPhone 15 Pro devices as well as iPad models that has USB-C port.
When it comes to data transfer, the maximum transfer speed that the adapter can support is 480Mbps. This is the same maximum transfer speed that iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus can support but way lower than iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max which are able to go as high as 10Gbps.
The support document also noted that the adapter should work fine with the wired CarPlay feature in most vehicles. That being said, Apple still recommends utilising the feature by using a direct connection with a USB cable to minimise disruption.
As for the pricing, you can obtain the new USB-C to Lightning Adapter from Apple Malaysia’s online store for RM159 which seemed rather hefty. The good news is that you are already able to purchase it immediately from the online store, in case you want to be prepared before getting your hands on the new iPhone 15 or iPhone 15 Pro which will be available in Malaysia starting from Friday, 29 September.
