Out of the blue, Huawei lifts the cover off the new Mate 60 Pro – featuring three punch holes in the front display

You may have heard of the punch-hole display, and even the pill-shaped display – but have you heard of a triple punch-hole display? Well, that is what Huawei just unveiled with the new Mate 60 Pro – and this announcement came out of the blue, catching everyone by surprise.

The most interesting design choice is the recurring triple circles both on the front and the back. On the front is the unique triple-punch hole design in the main display. The holes are for the selfie camera and the 3D ToF sensor.

The screen itself is a 6.82-inch 10-bit LTPO OLED screen featuring 2720 x 1260 pixels resolution and 1-120 Hz adaptive refresh rate – on par with most flagships in the market currently.

Harmony OS 4.0 runs all the software on this flagship as Huawei is still unable to use Android officially on their devices.

Fascinatingly, the Huawei Mate 60 Pro features satellite communication – both messaging and calls. While Apple is only enabling satellite communications for emergency use, Huawei is offering it for both voice and text, essentially making the Mate 60 Pro a bona fide satellite phone. The service is linked to China Telecom for now, so this feature will be dead-on-arrival outside of China. The phone will be shipping sans 5G connectivity – or at least based on their official website as the specs list did not list any 5G support.

While the official Vmall listing did not mention what the processor for the phone is, information from GizChina states that it is the Kirin 9000s CPU. The processor is one of the latest from Huawei, sporting two A34 cores, six specialized A78AE cores, and four A510 cores totalling up to 12 cores according to the website.

The news of a new proccessor is a surprise to many as Huawei stated previously that the Kirin 9000, last used in the Mate 40, will be the last flagship processor from the company as the US has sanctioned China on accessing chipset production. It is rumoured that Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) is producing the new chip, using their N+2 node process.

On the back, the Mate 60 Pro houses three cameras – a main 50MP sensor with OIS, PDAF and f/1.4-f/4.0 variable aperture, a 12MP ultra-wide camera with an f/2.2 lens, and a 48MP telephoto lens with f/3.0 lens, OIS and AF.

Rounding up the features on the Mate 60 Pro is a big 5,000mAh battery, 88W wired and 50W wireless charging, 20W reverse charging and it is also IP68 certified.

The back part is actually made in two pieces – the top part is the second-generation Kunlun glass while the bottom half is what Huawei is calling basalt, or most likely ceramic. Underneath both parts, Huawei has reinforced the structure with composite fibre to make the construction tougher overall.

Huawei Mate 60 Pro comes with 12 GB RAM and three storage options – 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB. It supports Huawei’s NM card for expansion, up to 256GB. For now, only the 512GB is available for preorder for 6,999 Chinese Yuan or about RM 4454.

Customers choose between four colours – White, Green, Purple and Black. For the last two colours, it has faux leather on top of the ceramic body.
