Looking for a unique number plate for your new car? The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has announced it will open biddings for a special M_M series of vehicle registration numbers to the public, in conjunction with the 66th Malaysian Independence Day.

The numbering system consists of an M prefix and suffix meant to signify “Malaysia Merdeka”, bookending up to four digits as is usually the case for Malaysian vehicle registration numbers. This plates will also serve as a memento of the country’s 66th year of independence, JPJ added.

There are three categories of numbers with different starting prices. Regular running numbers start from RM300, “popular” numbers start from RM800, “attractive” numbers start from RM3,000 and “golden” numbers start from a whopping RM20,000. There’s no indication what these categories mean, but we can assume that single-digit and popular double-digit numbers will be classified under the “golden” range.

If you manage to win the number you bid, you will need to register a car with the number within 12 months. The bidding process will kick off on the JPJeBid website this Thursday on Merdeka Day itself, 31st August 2023, and will close the following Monday, 4th September. The results of the auction will be published within 24 hours of closing on 5th September.
