It was barely a month ago that BYD Dolphin made its official debut in Malaysia but you can soon obtain the new electric vehicle through the Flux subscription service. The version that the service will be offering to customers is the Premium Extended variant which has a WLTP-rated range of 427km.
Equipped with a 150kW (201hp) electric motor that also produces 310Nm of torque, this Dolphin’s variant also comes with a 60.48kW battery pack. For charging, the Dolphin Premium Extended relies on a 7kW onboard AC charger while it can also support DC fast charging of up to 80kW.
Flux has listed the new EV at RM2,170 per month although this is inclusive of an RM800 promotional discount that only applies to the first month. Here is what the subscription fee actually looks like:
36 months plan: RM2,970/month
24 months plan: RM3,267/month
12 months plan: RM3,564/month
As per any other Flex offering, the BYD Dolphin subscription service comes with a monthly mileage cap. The EV comes standard with a Lite mileage package that allows customers to travel up to 1,250km per month for no additional cost.
There is an excess mileage fee of RM1.62/km if they breach that mileage limit though. They can choose to increase the cap by adding any of these mileage packages to their subscription:
Standard mileage package – 2,000km: RM297/month
Plus mileage package – 2,750km: RM594/month
Unlimited mileage package: RM1,350/month
There is also the Flex Ultra plan whereby subscribers are provided with unlimited mileage and a cancel-anytime policy. However, it comes at a rather hefty monthly fee of RM5,599 for the BYD Dolphin.
In general, the Flux subscription service has a much higher monthly commitment when compared to the traditional hire purchase arrangement. So, it is more suitable for those looking for a short-term lease.
For example, if you were to get a BYD Dolphin with a traditional hire-purchase arrangement, we were quoted a monthly instalment of less than RM1,300 for the Dolphon Premium Extended. This is based on a 9-year loan with an interest rate of 2.1% and a 10% downpayment.
Even with a shorter 5 years loan tenure, the monthly commitment would still be much lower than what Flux has set for the EV. That being said, Flux does offer a significantly lower upfront fee while the vehicle’s insurance and maintenance would be covered throughout the subscription tenure.
Aside from the Dolphin, there are other EVs available through Flux as well including the Mercedes EQE, Volvo XC40 Recharge, Hyundai Ioniq 5 Max, and BYD Atto 3. Also part of the list are the Hyundai Kona Electric E-Max, MG Rover ZS, and second-generation pre-facelift Nissan Leaf.
