[ UPDATE ] IPC Shopping Centre offering AC chargers for EVs, but there’s a catch

[ UPDATE 10/4/2023 10:02am ] The EV chargers at IPC Shopping Centre are now accessible through the IPC app. They have also tuned down to 11kW and cost RM7.00 per 30 minutes.

[ UPDATE 22/8/2023 5:10pm ] It’s been confirmed that the chargers at IPC Shopping Centre are rated at 22kW, not 11kW as previously reported. As such, the BYD Atto 3 is able to accept up to 6.7kW instead of the usual 3.3kW. Thanks to Joshua for the tip!

Visitors to IPC Shopping Centre (formerly known as Ikano Power Centre) and the surrounding Mutiara Damansara area have a new place to charge their electric vehicles. The shopping mall has teased the installation of new charging stations, telling users to “stay tuned for the official announcement soon.”

As it turns out, the aforementioned charging stations are already operational, consisting of four 22kW AC chargers with Type 2 connectors. Helpfully, IPC has reserved one of those chargers for people with disabilities/OKU. The mall is offering a free trial until 30th September.

Unlike most other malls, IPC has apparently handled the procurement, installation and maintenance of the chargers itself, rather than outsourcing them to a third-party provider like ChargEV or EV Connection (JomCharge).

Therein lies the catch—the mall isn’t able to piggyback off an established charging network, so you can’t activate the chargers through a smartphone app. Rather, you will have to call IPC security to unlock the charger so that you can plug up your EV. After that, a security guard will collect your details and issue a pass.

According to plaques installed at the chargers, each charger is limited to two hours of use, after which users will have to remove their vehicles within 15 minutes or risk getting clamped. A release fee of RM100 will be charged to remove the wheel clamp.

IPC is just the latest in a string of malls starting to implement EV chargers for its customers. Just a couple of days ago, we reported that The Gardens Mall has deployed DC and AC chargers managed by Gentari and JomCharge, while Shell Recharge was in the midst of installing its own chargers at Pavilion KL—right next to the new Tesla Superchargers.
