The sole authorised dealer for BMW in Sabah, Regas Premium Sabah has deployed public AC chargers in Kota Kinabalu. Said to be the first such rollout in the state, the deployment was done in collaboration with EV Connection which is the operator of the JomCharge network.
Located at T1 Bundusan, the deployment involved two units of 11kW AC chargers which can be activated using the JomCharge app. In terms of opening hours, these charges can be accessed 24 hours daily and it costs RM0.10/minute to utilise them.
Thanks to the recent roaming partnership, these chargers are accessible through the ChargEV app too. However, they have not yet appeared on Setel at the time this story is published.
Before this, Regas Premium deployed a DC fast charger with two 60kW connectors at its BMW showroom in Kota Kinabalu last year. This particular charger is part of the ChargEV network and costs RM1.00/min to use.
Based on the current data from PlugShare, these are the only public EV chargers in Sabah. That being said, Regas Premium is already planning to deploy more chargers in other parts of Sabah and the company said that among the next key areas that are already in their consideration is Tawau.
Nevertheless, it is yet another reminder that the EV charging infrastructure in Malaysia is still far behind despite the government’s ambition to have 10,000 public chargers by 2025. So, we do hope that other parties will also join the effort to grow the EV infrastructure in Sabah very soon.
