The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 was only launched last week, and already those who were fortunate to have the device (us included) are finding new ways to use the flip phone’s larger cover display. It’s pretty capable out of the box, offering a much larger camera viewfinder, bigger widgets with more information, a full-sized QWERTY keyboard and the ability to run full apps like Google Maps, WhatsApp, YouTube and even Netflix right on the front screen.

It must be said, however, that the current list of supported apps is very limited. Fortunately, tech YouTuber Jonathan Casey has figured out how to get any app to run on the cover screen, using a customisation app that Samsung itself developed.

First, you’ll have to download Good Lock from the Galaxy Store, and once it’s installed, open the app and install the MultiStar module. From there, go into the phone’s cover screen settings, tap on “Widgets” and enable “Launcher”, which is part of the aforementioned MultiStar module. You can then tap on it to add the apps you want to run on the cover screen.

And you can genuinely add any app, even those you wouldn’t think to use on such a small display. This includes Spotify (the full app, not the paltry Now Playing widget), Facebook, Instagram, Twitter (or X, as it’s now calling itself), TikTok, Chrome and even Waze.

You can even play full-fledged mobile games here, not least being Genshin Impact. And given that the Z Flip 5 is powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, it runs far better than it has any right to be, although the small screen size does mean the interface is very cramped. Just because you can doesn’t mean you should, you know.

Aside from the new cover screen and chip, the Z Flip 5 also features a new dual-rail hinge design that allows the screen to fold in a teardrop shape, finally enabling the phone to fold flat. It retains the same 12MP main and ultra-wide cameras, 10MP selfie camera, 3,700mAh battery and IPX8 water resistance rating as the Z Flip 4.

The phone RM100 more expensive model for model, priced at RM4,499 for the 256GB model and RM4,999 for 512GB of storage. It goes on sale on August 18, with pre-order promos including a free “double storage” upgrade to the 512GB model, a RM400 eVoucher and a 40% discount on purchase-with-purchase deals.
