Is TNB Allo and City Broadband about to launch the cheapest 100Mbps internet plan in Malaysia?

If there was going to be another major contender in the local fiber broadband space, don’t be surprised if it turned out to be Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) via their subsidiary Allo. Allo in turn offers their internet service to consumers via City Broadband, and if their latest teasers turn out to be true, City Broadband could also be offering the cheapest 100Mbps plan in Malaysia soon.

In a post on their Facebook page, City Broadband hints that tomorrow (28 July), they will reveal a new plan or promotion for their 100Mbps plan. At the moment, City Broadband is offering their 100Mbps plan for RM99 per month, with a Raya promo dropping it down to just RM89 per month for the first 12-months. Indeed, if City Broadband were to launch a new, cheaper monthly fee for their 100Mbps plan, we could be seeing the 100Mbps plan be around RM79 per month or even lower.

In fact, City Broadband is already offering one of the cheapest 100Mbps plans in Malaysia mind you, with Time also offering their 100Mbps plan for RM99 per month. TM Unifi and Maxis Home Fibre on the other hand offer 30Mbps internet at RM89 per month, while CelcomDigi Fibre offers a 50Mbps plan for RM90 a month. There’s also the Pakej Perpaduan Jalur Lebar Tetap initiative by the government, which brought 30Mbps internet plans to B40 groups at RM69 a month.

City Broadband’s other plans include a 300Mbps plan priced at RM129 per month, though currently on offer at RM99 per month as part of their Raya promo. There’s a 500Mbps plan too for RM139 per month, while if you want the fastest internet plan City Broadband offers they have a 1Gbps plan that goes for RM199 per month.

Of course, City Broadband’s limiting factor—and why you’re probably not reading this article while using City Broadband internet—is that its coverage is much smaller than that of Unifi. A quick check of the City Broadband coverage map shows that for the most part, their coverage only covers parts of Perak, Penang, Malacca, Kedah and Johor, with no coverage at all in Kuala Lumpur while in Selangor coverage is mostly limited to just Cyberjaya. This is actually significantly more than what they covered a few years before, with TNB though Allo expanding their fiber broadband coverage quite rapidly last year.
