Transport Minister Anthony Loke has announced that the government is introducing a flight subsidy initiative for public university students in Malaysia. Eligible students will be able to get a RM300 voucher for domestic flights within Malaysia. The initiative which costs an estimated RM16.8 million is expected to benefit over 56,000 public university students nationwide and is expected to begin on 15th August 2023.
According to Loke, the subsidy initiative will be implemented through a credit shell where participating airlines will issue a digital voucher worth RM300 to each eligible student to redeem for their flight tickets. The domestic routes cover flights between Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan. Take note that the subsidy is only valid for one-way or return economy class flight tickets between the student’s place of origin and place of study.
Students can use the vouchers to purchase flights from Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, Batik Air, Firefly and MYAirline and the vouchers must be redeemed by 31st October 2023. If the ticket price is less than RM300, Loke says the balance can be used for the next ticket purchase.
The Ministry of Transport will provide more details on its website later and students will be able to check their eligibility online. If a student found themselves not eligible, they are able to file an appeal to the Ministry of Higher Education through their varieties or apply for a subsidy for the flight tickets on the airlines’ websites.
