UMW Toyota Motor in Malaysia has also issued a statement to respond to the recent ‘procedural irregularity’ announced by Daihatsu Co Ltd on 28 April. The all-new Toyota Vios 2023 will continue to be delivered in Malaysia without disruption as the vehicle is assured to be safe and complies with safety regulations.

In a statement released today, UMW Toyota Motor President Datuk Ravindran K said “For customers who have booked their All-New Toyota Vios or are interested in purchasing it, we would like to assure you that the All-New Toyota Vios model complies with all safety regulations and there is no compromise to the quality of the vehicles.”

He added that subsequent testing has validated that the all-new Vios meets the UN-R95 certification. There is also no need to issue a recall for the Toyota Vios and sales can continue without disruption. UMW Toyota Motor also apologises for any distress caused to their customers and they wish to assure everyone of the safety and quality of their vehicles. The company also emphasised its commitment to customers’ safety which remains its topmost priority.

Toyota Vios 2023 and Perodua Axia 2023 were listed among the affected vehicles involved in the rigged side collision test. As reported earlier, Daihatsu added a ‘notch’ to reduce the risk of the interior door trim breaking with a sharp edge which may cause injury to an occupant when a side airbag is deployed in an accident. This modification was not added to the production vehicles.

Perodua had earlier issued a statement assuring that the Axia 2023 is safe and there will be no recall or suspension of new vehicle deliveries to customers. Despite the revelation by Daihatsu, Perodua says the UN-R95 certification given to the all-new Axia remains intact.

In Thailand, sales of the Toyota Yaris Ativ (Essentially Toyota Vios for Thailand) have been suspended temporarily. According to Toyota Motor Thailand, re-inspection in Japan is necessary specifically for Thailand and until such time, shipment and sales will be suspended.
