You’ll soon need to use a Google account to use your Fitbit

A couple of years ago, Fitbit was probably the name to look for if you wanted a fitness tracker or smartwatch on your wrist. But ever since Google completed its acquisition of the brand in 2021, it seems like Fitbit began losing out to other companies as well as Google themselves, who have since launched their own Pixel Watch.

The Google-fication of Fitbit isn’t about to stop there though, as the parent company has now announced that Fitbit accounts are set to go away. In its place will be Google accounts, with new Fitbit users set to be prompted to log into their Fitbit using a Google account with no option for a Fitbit account anymore starting this summer. Current Fitbit users meanwhile will be given the option to move now or later, but must still do so by 2025.

“Moving to Google Accounts lets us build a great foundation for Fitbit’s future, while providing you with added benefits. This is an important step to bring even more helpful updates and engaging experiences to you,” – Majd Bakar, Vice President of Fitbit Engineering

According to Google, the transition away from Fitbit accounts will bring with it a number of benefits to users. For example, once you integrate into using a Google account for your Fitbit, you’ll only need to use one password for it. It also makes it easier to manage connected apps and paired devices with all your info stored on a single account. Google also highlights its privacy and security as ‘industry-leading’, while maintaining the same Fitbit experience for the user.

If you’re a Fitbit user who wants to make the switch towards using your Google account on your fitness tracker, you can expect to see a prompt for it pop up on the Fitbit app later this year in Q3 2023. If you’ve missed the prompt, you can still do so by heading to the Settings page on the Fitbit app to start the process.
