Malaysian VFX artist turns KL into a zombie wasteland to promote The Last Of Us

You might have noticed a lot of hype surrounding HBO’s The Last Of Us series, based on the popular video game of the same name. Adding onto the hype is Malaysian VFX artist Azhar Zakeriah, who posted a few super-realistic TikTok videos of what Kuala Lumpur might look like in “The Last of Us” type zombie apocalypse.

In one of his videos of the same theme, Azhar showcased the iconic Petronas Twin Towers overgrown with foliage. He also added details like how the streets would be surrounded with debris and barricades, “symbolising Malaysia’s failed last stand against the zombie horde“.

In another one of the videos, Azhar turned the Bukit Bintang area into a zombie wasteland, including the iconic McDonald’s and crosswalk. There’s also a video done for Pavilion’s area.

In all of the videos, he added the words “The Last Of Us” in tribute to the hyped HBO show. The videos have also gone viral, with one of them garnering 3 million views.

“I primarily use Adobe After Effects for visual effects. I utilise the content-aware tool to remove people from the footage, and for difficult shots, I will motion track and remove them using Photoshop then export them back to After Effects,” said Azhar regarding how he created his work, “I’m thrilled that my TikTok video of Kuala Lumper with zombies lurking around went viral. It’s exciting to see people enjoy my work and it motivates me to keep creating.”

In his other TikTok videos, unrelated to The Last Of Us, he’s done some impressive work inspired by pop culture. Some are based on Marvel movies, but a lot of them are delightfully silly. According to IGN, the creator has 12 years of experience in visual effects, and has worked on various local TV shows throughout his career.
