[ UPDATE 06/01/2023 1:49PM ] The Go To-U app continues to show the chargers as not working, a day after the launch.

===

Go To-U has launched its Malaysian electric vehicle charging hub—the first such facility in the region to carry the branding of the California-based EV charging solutions provider—at RekaScape in Cyberjaya today. The event space houses covered space for four EVs to be juiced via two Star Charge 60kW DC fast chargers, each with two CCS2 connectors.

Go To-U Malaysia is a subsidiary of Roda Emas Industries (REISB), an EV charging station supplier and developer. Since 2018, the company has been contracted by TNB, ChargEV and BMW Group Malaysia to install and maintain their chargers.

The charging station is currently configured to send 30kW to each connector during the trial period, during which customers can charge for free until the end of the month. Managing director for REISB, Izuan Hafiz, said it has yet to decide whether it will allow 60kW through each nozzle, and it will be assessing demand from owners of EVs capable of accepting the higher wattage during this period.

Aside from the chargers, the space also houses a “lifestyle hub” where customers can wait in, with sofas and a coffee machine. There are also a few AC home chargers on display, which are presumably available for purchase.

Go To-U Malaysia has applied for an Electric Vehicle Charging System (EVCS) licence—required for all new and existing stations from March 31—from the Energy Commission and is awaiting approval. This licence allows operators to charge users per kWh used, rather than a time-based calculation predominantly being used today. However, the company has not decided which method it will use once the trial period ends.

Customers can book the charger through the Go To-U app, available on the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store. The app already includes Sime Darby Motors’ network of chargers (mostly at Auto Bavaria BMW and Mini dealers), as well as those from Tenaga Nasional’s TNBX subsidiary.

Today’s event also saw the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between REISB and Cyberview to develop the smart mobility ecosystem in Cyberjaya. This will see the two companies exploring a potential collaboration to expand the EV charging network and management systems in the city.
