There definitely won’t be a Nintendo Switch Pro, reportedly. So, here’s what Nintendo wants to do next

After a lot of back and forth about whether or not Nintendo will release some sort of Switch Pro, or an updated version of its Switch console, there has reportedly been a confirmation that it definitely isn’t happening. Apparently, Nintendo has instead opted to focus on building a brand-new console.

According to John Linneman on the Digital Foundry podcast, a “mid-generation Switch update” was initially planned as many developers have acknowledged it. However, it looks like Nintendo is focusing on a next-gen version of the portable console.

“So I think at one point internally from what I can understand from talking to different developers, is that there was some sort of mid-generation Switch update planned at one point and that seems to be no longer happening,” said Linneman.

But don’t expect the new Nintendo console to come out this year. Linneman says that even though its “clear” what they want to do next, he doesn’t think it will get released in 2023.

In September last year, Nintendo also denied the Switch Pro was in development. However, developers were still making 4K games for the console. The companies ranged from large publishers to small studios—including one that has never made a console game before, Zynga Inc.

Linneman also speculates that Nintendo is being cautious about building a new console. The GameCube, which was succeeded by the Wii console, didn’t do too well. And the Wii U after that failed to make a lasting impression too.
