Oppo to offer 4 years of Android updates on flagship phones, matching Samsung, OnePlus

One by one, Android phone makers are finally starting to catch up with Apple when it comes to providing support for older devices. Following the footsteps of Google, Samsung and, more recently, OnePlus, Oppo has confirmed that it will be providing four years of major Android updates and five years of security patches for selected flagship devices.

This follows an announcement just over a year ago that it would be providing three major updates and four years of security patches. There’s a catch, however—the company said the new policy would only apply to phones released in 2023, meaning that this year’s devices like the Find X5 Pro and Find N2 are likely not eligible.

Oppo also said it has achieved its fastest new ColorOS rollout in history—since launching the latest version, ColorOS 13, on August 18, the company has now offered it on 33 models, bringing Android 13 to those devices. That’s 50% higher than what Oppo achieved with ColorOS 12 over the same four-month period.

ColorOS 13 brought with it a new water-inspired Aquamorphic Design UI, as well as Multi-Screen Connect mirroring and Meeting Assistant functions, a Smart Always-on Display with Spotify functionality and large folders on the home screen. The company has also ported over some features from OnePlus’ OxygenOS, including the Insight AOD and the Shelf for displaying widgets.
