There are only a handful of companies that make full on gaming smartphones. I’m not talking about the phones with flagship processors and a bit of RAM claiming to be “hardcore gaming devices”. I’m talking about devices that that have RGB, tricked out wacky designs and friggin’ fans built into their phone chassis. And if you’re looking for a baller gaming device, there’s good news because a brand new one may be just on the horizon. It’s called the Red Magic 8 Pro.
While not as well-known in the mainstream as stuff like the ROG Phone or the Black Shark, Red Magic has been making equally bonkers gaming phones for a while now. The last device to launch in Malaysia was the Red Magic 7S, and it looks like its successor is quickly on the way. Red Magic took to their weibo to announce that their upcoming Red Magic 8 Pro will be launching in China on the 26th of December 2022.
Here’s what we know officially so far: there will be two variants, one will have a 5,000 mAh battery while the other will have a 6,000 mAh battery. And…that’s it. They’re being very tight lipped about everything else, but thankfully you can only keep so many things from those who seek. Based on the reports we’ve seen, this smartphone will likely feature Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, up to 16GB of LPDDR5x RAM and 1TB of UFS 4.0 internal storage.
This report comes off a TENAA entry that Gizmochina found, and it als includes mentions of an 8MP under-display selfie camera in front, a 50MP main camera at the back, an 8MP ultra-wide camera as well as a 2MP macro and depth sensor. One juicy bit of info to add on to the point about the batteries is that multiple reports have indicated that it could very well support 165W of fast charging—which is crazy fast.
It is also apparently not going to be a small phone, packing a 6.8″ OLED display that pushes a resolution of 2480×1116 pixels. On top of that, from the images found in the TEENA entry, it looks like the company’s signature fan makes another appearance at the top left of the phone.
It’ll be interesting to see how this phone stacks up against something like the iQoo 11 5G, which recently launched in Malaysia for RM3,499. That’s a pretty solid price for the specs you get, but it does feel relatively tame compared to most of Red Magic’s flagship phones. Which are you more interested in?
