Malaysia will decide on the next government this coming Saturday, 19th November 2022. To cast your vote this coming 15th General Election, the standard SOP is to bring your IC (MyKad) when you go to the polling station. But what happens if your IC is lost or stolen? According to the Elections Commission (SPR), you are still allowed to vote if you bring these alternative documents.
Besides your IC, the polling stations will accept your valid driver’s licence or Malaysian passport as a form of identification. Alternatively, they will also accept your temporary identification document (Dokumen Pengenalan Sementara JPN KPPK09) or a JPN-certified receipt of loss of IC report (Resit Laporan Kehilangan Kad Pengenalan JPN KPPK11).
In case you didn’t know, all Malaysian adults aged 18 years old and above are automatically registered to vote after the passing of the #Undi18 bill. You can check your polling location as well as the candidates in your constituency through MySPRSemak.
Do note that you are not allowed to bring your smartphones into the polling booth and it is an offence to take a picture of your ballot paper. You’ll have to surrender your smartphone at a designated area and collect it back after you’ve cast your vote.
SPR has reminded voters that it is the responsibility of all parties to ensure the secrecy of the ballot during the General Election as defined under the Election Offences Act 1954. Individuals who are convicted for such an offence would face a maximum one-year jail term or a fine of up to RM3,000, or both.
