YTL Communications (Yes 5G) have recently announced that its Databack programme with Shopee has been enhanced to support 5G usage. Previously, Yes 4G users are able to utilise the databack without any plan as long as the line has active validity. However, if you’re using Yes 5G, you would still need to activate an unlimited monthly plan if you want to enjoy 5G with uncapped speeds.
From the looks of it, Yes 5G doesn’t let you use 5G purely on the Databack quota. After our Yes FT5G RM30 unlimited plan expired a few days ago, we try to continue using the 35GB data which we redeemed from the Shopee app. While the phone still shows 5G and Ookla speedtest with over 500Mbps downloads, the actual mobile usage appears to be throttled on 5G. Fast.com shows less than 200kbps while YouTube video streaming seems to be capped below 240p.
In order to use 5G on prepaid, Yes 5G users will need to activate the RM30 Unlimited plan on a monthly basis. If you choose to enable autopay, you will only need to pay RM25/month.
To recap, the Databack programme allows Shopee users to redeem 5GB of data for every RM50 spent in a month on the eCommerce platform. This means if you spend RM200 in a month, you’ll receive 20GB of Yes 5G Databack.
According to YTL, users with data quota plans can use Databack as an add-on. However, for users on an unlimited plan, the databack can be used as an additional hotspot quota. This would make more sense for Yes Infinite Postpaid which comes with a limited hotspot quota each month. The basic RM58/month plan offers unlimited 4G and 5G data with no FUP but it gets 10GB of hotspot each month.
At the moment, FT5G prepaid users can enjoy unlimited 5G data including hotspot on Digital Nasional Berhad’s 5G network for RM30/month until future notice. However, if you go outside the 5G coverage area, the plan offers unlimited 4G with a 7Mbps speed cap along with 9GB of hotspot quota.
