With less than 3 months to go, Digital Nasional Berhad now aims to achieve 37.9% 5G population coverage by the end of this year. Yes 5G, the first and only telco to offer commercial 5G services has revealed that the 5G network is now available in Melaka and also Negeri Sembilan.

The 5G availability in the two states is reflected on Yes 5G’s coverage checker as well as Unifi Mobile’s Uni5G page. This brings the total number of territories/states covered to nine which include Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Selangor, Johor, Perak, Penang and Kelantan.

The coverage map also revealed several 5G sites in East Malaysia that are in progress. This includes Kuching, Bintulu, Miri, Kota Kinabalu, Lahad Datu, Semporna and Tawau. In Peninsular Malaysia, there are upcoming sites for Kuala Terengganu, Kuala Dungun, Chukai, Kuantan and Pekan.

As of 30th September, DNB has deployed 1,915 out of the planned 3,518 5G sites for 2022 and it has 33.2% 5G coverage in populated areas nationwide. DNB aims to achieve 37.9% 5G population by the end of this year which is below its original target of 40% 5G population coverage. A total of 259 sites in Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Sabah and Sarawak have been completed as of end of September.

According to the original roadmap revealed last year, DNB is deploying the 5G network on a very aggressive timeline. It aims to achieve 40% 5G population coverage by the end of this year which will include Sabah and Sarawak with a total of 4,018 sites. Ultimately, they aim to achieve 80% 5G population coverage by the end of 2024.
