As the lights go out and away the F1 drivers go during the Singaporean Formula One GP weekend, those down south who plan to drive just as fast after crossing the Causeway might want to first pay off their traffic summons. This comes as Johor police chief Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat revealed recently that there’s been 109,758 traffic summons issued to Singaporean vehicle owners since 2014, with over three quarters of these yet to have been settled.
According to Malay Mail, the Johor police department have issued 2.3 million traffic summons since 2014. However, only 600,000 of them have been paid off by the offending drivers. Among the Singaporean vehicles who have been summoned meanwhile, over 83,000 of them have yet to settle their fines too. As Datuk Kamarul adds:
“From our records, 23.5 per cent of Singaporean vehicle owners have paid their outstanding traffic summonses, while the remaining 76.4 per cent have yet to settle with the police,” – Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat, Johor police chief
Datuk Kamarul also notes that most of the summons they’ve issued have been for vehicles driving over the speeding limit, as well as those who have run a red light.
The Johor police has since conducted a summons reduction program to encourage drivers to settle their outstanding traffic summons, as well as to provide friendly advice to motorcyclists to ensure to comply with traffic rules. The summons reduction program happened throughout the past weekend; however, the Johor police have since stated that during the summons reduction campaign only 26 Singaporean drivers came up to pay off their tickets.
