Petronas’ 180kW DC electric vehicle fast charger at the Pedas-Linggi Northbound lay-by, installed by Gentari, has been operational since late August and was free to use until September 16. Now, the company has confirmed the pay-per-use pricing for the station located along the North-South Highway—and it’s RM3 per minute.

This works out to RM180 per hour, although your charging time will be a lot less than that if your car is able to make full use of the 180kW, like the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6 and Porsche Taycan can. Customers may unlock and pay for the charger using either the Setel or JomCharge app.

The ABB Terra 184 charger has two connector guns, but as paultan.org reports, only one can be used at one time, dispensing the maximum charging power. By contrast, the 180kW charger at the Gambang Eastbound R&R is configured to provide 90kW through both guns, so that two cars can be charged at one time. There, the pricing is RM2.20 per minute, equating to RM66 every half an hour.

According to Petronas strategy, business development and commercial manager Syafiq Fauzan bin Ariffin, this configuration is being trialled at the Pedas-Linggi location because the company does not expect the facility to be congested and require two charging bays all of the time. Petronas will revert back to a dual 90kW setup at a later date, he said.

Gentari’s charging network now spans 12 locations across Peninsular Malaysia, including two 60kW DC chargers recently installed at Suria KLCC. It will expand the network with DC stations at the Gambang Westbound R&R, Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah in Ipoh and Bandar Baru Ayer Hitam in Johor to complete the first phase of its rollout, slated for the end of the year.

The Shell Recharge 180kW DC fast charger at the Tangkak lay-by

The Pedas-Linggi location’s single 180kW configuration is similar to the one employed at the also-180kW Shell Recharge DC charger for southbound drivers, located at the Tangkak lay-by. That one is RM1 per minute more expensive at RM4 per minute, which with the RM4 confirmation fee works out to a whopping RM124 per half-hour.

Users can pay for a Gold subscription of RM835 a year to lower the charging cost to RM2.40 per minute for the first 25 minutes and RM1 every subsequent minute, equating to a total cost of RM68 per half-hour. A Platinum subscription comes free with the purchase of every Porsche EV, dropping the price to RM2 per minute for the first 25 minutes—working out to a per-half-hour cost of RM58.
