This Xiaomi smartphone is the first Android with the ‘honour’ of copying Dynamic Island

It’s only been a few weeks since Apple showed off the iPhone 14 Pro lineup with the new Dynamic Island cutout, but Android smartphone manufacturers are seemingly already on the move to incorporate it into their own devices, just like the notch and the lack of an audio jack. But perhaps we just weren’t expecting to see one so fast, with Xiaomi about to launch the Xiaomi Civi 2 in China which features a familiar looking pill-shaped cutout.

According to Xiaomi’s Weibo page, they’ll be launching the Civi 2 this 27 September. Based from its teaser pictures, the device will feature a center-aligned pill-shaped cutout housing a pair of 32MP front facing cameras, with one main camera and one ultra-wide camera. The main 32MP front camera will also feature autofocus. Meanwhile, there’s also a triple rear camera setup on the rear, with a 50MP main shooter using the Sony IMX766 sensor.

Let’s be clear here though, the iPhone 14 Pro was definitely not the first smartphone with a pill-shaped cutout. We’ve already seen these before on the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S10+ from 2019, along with others such as the Realme X3 SuperZoom and the OnePlus Nord. However, unlike those devices, the Civi 2’s pill cutout is centered, just like the iPhone 14 Pro.

That being said, the Xiaomi Civi 2 likely won’t have the same level of software integration as the actual Dynamic Island—the Chinese giant had previously already stated they won’t be implementing such features with the Redmi K60. You could of course just download one of the themes on the Mi Theme Store that adds in the Dynamic Island style of notifications.

The Xiaomi Civi 2 will be latest in its youth-centric smartphone lineup. Unfortunately for those interested, the Civi lineup is typically a China-only device. Nevertheless, you can still check out their Weibo page for more details on the Civi 2.
