Oppo Reno 8 series Malaysia: Everything you need to know

Oppo has launched two new smartphones in Malaysia, the Oppo Reno 8 and the Reno 8 Pro. The latter is being called a ‘premium midrange’ smartphone by Oppo, while the former is perhaps a more traditional midrange device.

Oppo Reno 8 series Malaysia pricing and availability

Both the Oppo Reno 8 and the Reno 8 Pro are now available for pre-order from their official store on Shopee and Lazada, as well as their authorised retail outlets nationwide. Here’s how much they’ll cost you:

  • Oppo Reno 8, 8GB RAM, 256GB storage – RM2,399
  • Oppo Reno 8 Pro, 12GB RAM, 256GB storage – RM3,499

If you do pre-order a Reno 8 series device, you’ll be able to redeem free gifts worth up to RM1,486 too, which includes an exclusive Reno 8 series giftbox worth RM399, a year of Oppo Care screen damage protection worth RM199 and up to RM888 in My Oppo Members Privileges.

On top of that, if you were to buy a Reno 8 series device at a My Oppo or Oppo Brand store from now till the end of July, you’ll also get an additional Reno 8 series limited edition shopping bag worth RM89, and an offer to also purchase the Oppo Pad Air for RM150 off or an offer to purchase the Enco Air 2 Pro earbuds for RM100 off. You’ll also get additional free gifts if you opt to purchase the Oppo Pad Air along with your Reno 8 series device.

Oppo Reno 8 Pro specs

Starting off with the more premium midrange smartphone here, the Oppo Reno 8 Pro has a 6.7-inch, FHD+ AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. Packing a 93.4% screen-to-body ratio, the display also covers 100% of the DCI-P3 colour gamut, and has a normal max brightness of 500nits, reaching 800nits when in high brightness mode. There’s also a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 5 over it for scratch resistance too.

Under the hood, you’ll find a MediaTek Dimensity 8100-Max, the same system-on-chip found on the India-only OnePlus 10R. Oppo says that keeping it cool is a large vapour chamber working with a graphene film to dissipate heat. It gets mated to 12GB of LPDDR5 memory as well as 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage, and comes with the ColorOS 12.1 skin of Android 12 out of the box.

In the camera department, the Reno 8 Pro notably features the MariSilicon X, an in-house custom image neural processing unit developed by Oppo and first appeared in the Oppo Find X5 Pro. This NPU will deal with the images taken by the triple rear camera setup on the Reno 8 Pro, which has a 50MP, f/1.8 main camera using a Sony IMX766 sensor. That gets flanked by an 8MP, f/2.2 ultrawide camera and a 2MP, f/2.4 macro lens. On the front of the device meanwhile there’s a 32MP, f/2.4 selfie camera using the Sony IMX709 sensor.

Elsewhere, you’ll also find a 4,500mAh battery that features 80W SuperVOOC fast charging, which Oppo claims can charge your battery to 50% in just 11 minutes. Oppo also says that the battery will last up to 1,600 charging cycles, twice the industrial standard. There’s also an in-display fingerprint sensor, stereo speakers and support for NFC, WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3 as well as 5G connectivity. The Oppo Reno 8 Pro will come in Glazed Green and Glazed Black colourways.

Oppo Reno 8 specs

As for the non-Pro version of the Oppo Reno 8, it comes with a smaller 6.4-inch, FHD+ AMOLED display with up to a 90Hz refresh rate. There’s a 90.8% screen-to-body with a typical brightness of 430nits and a peak brightness of 800nits. You’ll also find a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 5 over it for scratch resistance, while the back of the device is plastic, unlike its Pro sibling which has a glass back.

Under the hood, the Reno 8 finds itself powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 1300, with 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage. Keeping it cool is a vapour chamber liquid cooling system for heat dissipation. It too runs ColorOS 12.1 out of the box based on Android 12.

As for its cameras, being the non-Pro Reno 8 device it loses out on the MariSilicon X image neural processing unit. However, it still has a 50MP, f/1.8 main camera using the Sony IMX766 sensor, flanked by an 8MP, f/2.2 ultrawide angle shooter and a 2MP, macro lens. The front of the device also has the same 32MP, f/2.4 selfie camera using the Sony IMX709 sensor.

Keeping the lights on meanwhile is a 4,500mAh battery with 80W SuperVOOC fast charging. There’s also an in-display fingerprint sensor, though there’s apparently no stereo speakers here. For connectivity, the Reno 8 will support 5G, Bluetooth 5.3, WiFi 6 and NFC. It comes in two colourways, Shimmer Black and Shimmer Gold.
