Apple is reportedly releasing a metaverse-ready headset with an M2 chip

There are already rumours that Apple will be releasing a mixed reality headset that’s able to deliver augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) experiences. But a recent report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman revealed that it could also come with Apple’s flagship M2 processor

It’s said that the mixed reality headset would be launched as early as January 2023, according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Kuo notes that the headset is “the most complicated product Apple has ever designed” but that its release could help fuel “rapid growth” in the market for these headsets.

There’s more of a demand for going into AR and VR worlds online since the COVID-19 pandemic when people were encouraged to social distance. For now, there might not be as large of a demand with borders opening up and loosened restrictions, but companies are still going full steam ahead with the “metaverse”—including Facebook, which even switched its company name to Meta.

Gurman’s prediction for the Apple headset states that it will include not only the new M2 chip, but with 16GB of RAM—which could indicate a potentially more powerful level of performance than the Meta Quest 2. That headset comes with 6GB of RAM and the Snapdragon XR2 Platform, by comparison.

Previously, Ming-Chi Kuo stated that Apple’s metaverse headset will only have the M1 chip. But that was way before Apple announced the M2 chip at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC)—which took place earlier this month.

In Gurman’s prediction, Apple’s other new products include four iPhone 14 models, three Apple Watch variations, several Macs with M2 and M3 chips, low-end and high-end iPads, updated AirPods Pro earbuds, a fresh HomePod, and an upgraded Apple TV. These products are expected to be coming in between the fall of 2022 and first half of 2023.
