All unused AirAsia X credits are converted to vouchers. Here are the terms and conditions

As announced recently, AirAsia X will be converting all unused credits to travel vouchers in the coming months. According to the medium to long-haul airline under Capital A, the move to convert credits to vouchers will allow for business efficacy and at the same time, provide travel benefits to their guests as it comes with a validity of 5 years from the date of issuance.

ALL unused credits even before debt restructuring will be converted to travel voucher

If you have any unused credit that was issued by AirAsia X even before the debt restructuring process, your credits will be converted to vouchers. For example, if you have previously received a credit refund two years ago due to an AirAsia X flight cancellation, this credit will be converted to AirAsia X travel vouchers as well.

Before the travel voucher conversion exercise, passengers could utilise the credit for any AirAsia bookings including domestic flights and you can even use the credit to purchase add-ons including luggage, meals, and preferred seating. Once it is converted to vouchers, you can only utilise it for AirAsia X (D7) flights.

How do you use the AirAsia X voucher?

AirAsia X has begun issuing travel vouchers to its affected customers via direct email. According to the airline, passengers with outstanding or unused credit will receive a single voucher with the full amount. This is great as it allows you to utilise it fully on a single booking. To redeem the voucher, just login using your AirAsia account and book an AirAsia X flight that has the D7 code. After selecting your flights and filling up your details, DO NOT click on “ChecKout” which processes the payment immediately with your saved payment card. Instead, you should click on “Change” and you will be directed to a different checkout page that allows you to enter the voucher code.

If the voucher value is below your total ticket price, you will have to pay the price difference using your preferred payment method including credit card or online banking. However, if your voucher value is higher than the booking, the extra value will be retained in your account. Similar to a gift card, you can reuse the same voucher code to utilise the remaining voucher amount for your next booking.

What are the terms and conditions for the AirAsia X travel voucher?

Unlike a credit shell which typically is valid for two years (some extended to 3 years), the AirAsia X travel voucher has a validity of 5 years from the date of issuance. If you received the voucher on 25th May 2022, it is valid until 24th May 2027. The vouchers are non-transferable and are tied to your AirAsia account.

While the 5-year validity is good news, the voucher comes with its own restrictions. As mentioned earlier, it can only be utilised for AirAsia X (D7) flights which currently only fly a handful of destinations such as Sydney, New Delhi and Seoul. You can’t use it on other AirAsia affiliate flights with the flight code AK, Z2, QZ, FD, I5 or XJ.

Fortunately, there are no blackout dates for the AirAsia X voucher so you can utilise it during peak season and weekend holidays. However, the T&C states that the voucher is only applicable for the base fare of the flight. You can’t use the voucher to pay for airport taxes, fees, insurance surcharge, and even add-ons such as baggage, seats, meals and other extra costs.

AirAsia X RM499 Unlimited Pass will be refunded in vouchers

Besides the outstanding credit, AirAsia X will also refund the unused RM499 unlimited pass as vouchers. We are told that the voucher issuance is done in batches so you may receive it as a separate voucher from the outstanding unused credit. Looking at the AirAsia checkout page, you are able to combine up to a maximum of 5 vouchers in a single transaction.

Affected guests to get 0.5% one-off payment and a potential portion of AAX profits

As part of its commitment during the debt restructuring exercise, all affected AirAsia X guests will receive a 0.5% one-off payment of their paid ticket fee in March 2023. In addition, guests will also receive a portion of AirAsia X’s profits if it achieves certain performance targets for the financial years ending 2023-2026 as outlined in the Explanatory Statement.
