Even Bill Gates doesn’t want to use a Microsoft Surface Duo 2

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates may not be involved in his company’s day-to-day operations but you would probably expect him to have access to the latest and greatest hardware Microsoft has to offer. When it comes to a mobile device, the billionaire philanthropist has picked the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 as his daily driver as revealed during a recent Reddit AMA (ask me anything) session.

When a Reddit user asked, “What kind of phone do you have?”, Bill Gates responded “I have an Android Galaxy ZFold3. I try different ones. With this screen, I can get by with a great portable PC and the phone and nothing else.”

It looks like Bill Gates is loving the flexible 7.6″ AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and the multi-tasking capabilities of the Galaxy Z Fold 3. It’s the only device he needs besides a portable PC, which presumably is still a Microsoft device. This comes as a surprise as Microsoft has its own foldable device like the Surface Duo 2 which offers a large 8.3″ display real estate.

Unlike the Galaxy Z Fold 3, the Surface Duo series doesn’t use a single foldable display but instead has two separate 5.8″ OLED screens that are attached by two hinges. When folded, the Surface Duo 2 is significantly wider than the Z Fold 3, and it lacks a cover display. The Microsoft foldable device can support voice calls but you’re going to look silly holding a small tablet next to your face.

In terms of hardware, the Surface Duo 2 is still pretty decent with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor with 5G. It’s paired with 8GB of RAM and a choice of 128GB, 256GB or 512GB of storage. In the US, the 128GB storage version is going for USD 999 (about RM4,384) while the 256GB option is going for USD 1,099 (about RM4,823).

Looking at the practicality, hardware, and features, it is quite clear that the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 is a more practical choice. The Z Fold 3 also runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor but it has 12GB RAM (4GB more than the Surface Duo 2) and a choice of 256GB or 512GB of storage. On top of that, the Samsung device also gets IPX8 rated water resistance and there’s also wireless charging which is extra convenient. In Malaysia, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is priced from RM6,699 for the 256GB storage version and RM7,099 for the 512GB storage variant.

If you would need a single device for your mobile needs, which would you pick between the two? Let us know in the comments down below.
