If you know me well enough, you’d know that I’ve been listening to K-Pop almost exclusively for about a month straight now. I’m not sick of it yet, but the hype for me will likely die down soon. Fortunately, for Spotify, they’ve come up with a creative solution to keep its listeners interested in the genre—creating a personalised Blend playlist based on some of the most popular K-Pop groups right now.
In late August 2021, Spotify introduced a feature called Blend—which sync your music tastes with someone elses. Blend includes cover art to help identify each of your Blend playlists, taste match scores, as well as “shareable data stories” that can be shared on social channels. Here’s how you can make your own Blend playlist with a friend.
However, Blend playlists usually only work when two personal accounts link up. You couldn’t previously sync with an artist you like—well, not until this year anyway.
In March of this year, Spotify announced that users can make Blend playlists with select artists. They include Megan Thee Stallion, Diplo, Charli XCX, amongst others—even K-Pop group BTS. However, to do so, you’d need to click on the link of their names in this article. You can’t manually go to their pages on Spotify to find a Blend button, even though that makes the most sense.
Now, Spotify has expanded their Blend-approved artists to more K-Pop, joining BTS. The artists include Stray Kids (my personal favourite), ENHYPEN, TOMORROW X TOGETHER, NMIXX, and AB6IX. But since you’re only able to Blend by specific links, I’ve added them below along with the Spotify-made graphics.
After clicking on the link, Spotify will take you to your brand-new personalised Blend playlist based on the music you already listen to and the music of the specific K-Pop group. The playlist sort of reminds me of Spotify’s Idol Lounge playlists—where they mix in the music recommended by each K-Pop idol with their own songs. Spotify has also noticeably been investing in K-Pop, and… let’s just say that the effort isn’t wasted.
