SpaceX, Elon Musk‘s aerospace firm, reportedly paid a flight attendant USD 250,000 (about RM1 million) to settle a sexual misconduct claim against the billionaire in 2018. And somehow, Musk claims that the allegation “should be viewed through a political lens“. But what does a sexual misconduct case have anything to do with him being Republican?
Business Insider reported that a flight attendant accused Musk of exposing his genitals to her and rubbing her leg without her consent back in 2016. The attendant, who worked as a member of the cabin crew for SpaceX’s corporate jet fleet, also claimed that Musk had offered to buy her a horse in exchange for an erotic massage.
The incident was documented in a declaration made by the flight attendant’s friend—as well as other documents—to support her claim. In the declaration, she also was reportedly encouraged to get licensed as a masseuse so that she could give Musk massages.
The attendant’s friend said that Musk “whipped out his penis” and “touched her thigh and told her he would buy her a horse” as a bribe seeing as the attendant rides horses. The attendant declined and continued with the massage without engaging in any sexual conduct.
“She figured things could just go back to normal and she would pretend like nothing happened… However, she started to feel as if she was receiving some sort of retaliation where her shifts were cut back, and she was starting to feel really stressed,” continued her friend.
The declaration also stated that the attendant felt “she was being pushed out and punished for refusing to prostitute herself”. SpaceX reportedly offers in-house massage therapists as “perks” for Musk’s executives.
In 2018, the attendant hired an employment lawyer and sent a complaint to SpaceX’s human resources department detailing the case. SpaceX then agreed to give the attendant a USD 250,000 payment in exchange for a promise not to sue over the claims.
The friend said that the attendant decided to come forward without consulting the flight attendant because she “felt an obligation” to share what she has been told about Musk. And unlike the flight attendant, her friend is not bound by any non-disclosure agreements.
A day before Business Insider published the story, Musk posted a tweet saying that he “will vote Republican” and that Democrats “have become the party of division & hate”. He also said that “political attacks” on him will escalate “dramatically in coming months”.
After the story came out, Musk sent out another tweet. This time, he emphasised that attacks against him “should be viewed through a political lens”. He also peppered in that the attacks won’t deter him from “fighting for a good future and your right to free speech”.
I’m not sure how a sexual misconduct allegation turned into a politically charged attack. Musk also says that the allegations are “utterly untrue”. But investigations editor at Insider, John Cook, said that Insider “reached out to the principals for comment regarding this story” at 9 am eastern on Wednesday, May 18—a day before Musk revealed his new political affiliations.
Previously, Musk also used Twitter to send the Twitter CEO the poop emoji as a response regarding the platform’s spam bot issue. He aims to buy Twitter at a lower price than the initial USD 44 billion if he can negotiate the deal after pointing out Twitter’s flaws.
