Want to use 5G on the Huawei P50 Pro? All you’ll need is this phone case

The ongoing US trade restrictions on Huawei have crippled its smartphone business. Besides losing access to Google Mobile Services, Huawei’s new Snapdragon-powered smartphones can’t support 5G including the P50 Pro, P50 Pocket, and the Mate Xs 2. If you really need to use 5G on the P50 Pro, there’s now a solution from a third-party.

A company called SoyeaLink has introduced a special case for the Huawei P50 Pro which will enable 5G connectivity. It looks like a typical battery pack case that plugs into the phone’s USB-C slot. Essentially, this is a 5G module and it uses eSIM instead of relying on a physical SIM card.

According to the brief product page, it gets an undisclosed 1.35GHz CPU and supports several sub-6GHz 5G bands in both SA and NSA modes. There’s also a pass-thru USB-C slot that enables you to charge the P50 Pro without removing the case. The case weighs 52g and when it’s attached, the P50 Pro will weigh 247g in total which is heavier than the iPhone 13 Pro Max. From the looks of it, it doesn’t come with its own battery so it may impact the P50 Pro’s battery life when 5G is in use.

Overall, this is a desperate attempt to make Huawei devices relevant in 2022. With 5G becoming mainstream, it is tough for Huawei to be pushing a new 4G smartphone even in the Chinese market. Once a dominant player, it has disappeared from the top 5 smartphone vendor list even in mainland China.
