Yes extends free unlimited 5G data offer until further notice

Yes, the first and only telco to offer 5G in Malaysia, has announced that it is extending its free unlimited 5G offering until further notice. When Yes introduced its 5G-enabled plans back in December, the free unlimited data was supposed to end on 31st March 2022 as part of Digital Nasional Berhad’s (DNB) free access offer to all telcos.

Take note that you must have an active Yes FT5G subscription plan to use the 5G network. This includes Yes Prepaid FT5G unlimited at RM30/month which offers unlimited calls to all networks, unlimited 4G data capped at 7Mbps, 9GB hotspot data and unlimited 5G data at full speeds. The second plan is Yes Postpaid FT5G at RM49/month which offers 100GB 4G Data and unlimited 5G data at full speeds. According to Yes, customers with a valid plan can enjoy 5G with unlimited data quota with uncapped speeds.

At the moment, you can enjoy 5G connectivity at selected areas in Kuala Lumpur, Cyberjaya and Putrajaya where DNB’s 5G network is available. DNB is currently rolling out 5G in Johor and they have marked Selangor, Penang and Perak for its upcoming 5G sites. It aims to achieve 40% 5G population coverage by the end of 2022 and 80% population coverage by the end of 2024. On the national 5G network, you can get gigabit speeds as high as 1.5Gbps if you’re at the most optimal location and DNB promised a minimum of 100Mbps at the weakest point of coverage.

After the government’s recent decision to continue the 5G rollout with DNB as the Single Wholesale Network (SWN), DNB has extended its free 5G network access offer to telcos until 30th June 2022. According to DNB, this is to facilitate a seamless transition for telcos that have yet to sign up. Besides YTL Communications’ Yes 5G, Telekom Malaysia has accepted DNB’s free 5G access offer but they have yet to enable 5G for its Unifi Mobile customers.

In case you missed it, Samsung Galaxy S21 series devices can now support 5G connectivity in Malaysia. If you own a Galaxy S21, S21+ or S21 Ultra, just download the latest software update which brings One UI 4.1 and it will enable the device to connect to 5G using a Yes 5G SIM.

Unfortunately, other Galaxy models including the latest Galaxy S22 series are not supported yet. Most Chinese-branded 5G smartphones can already connect to the 5G network out of the box. However, this isn’t the case for both Samsung and Apple, which would require a software or carrier update. At the moment, Apple only lists Celcom, Digi, Maxis and U Mobile as partner telcos with FaceTime, eSIM, and VoLTE. This means that Yes and Unifi Mobile users will not be able to access the full suite of connectivity features and services on their iOS device.
