Nintendo filed a possible “Switch Pro” controller patent

Nintendo is yet again getting my hopes up. A fan on Twitter discovered that the company had filed a weird-looking controller patent last year, that looks a lot like a Pro Nintendo Switch controller. So, does this mean that a Nintendo Switch Pro might actually be released?

The patent—which can be seen here—shows a few illustrations that look like a simplified Pro controller for the Nintendo Switch, which can be purchased separately as an official Switch accessory. But besides that, the patent doesn’t reveal all that much. In fact, it only really talks about the ‘housing’ and the batteries in the device.

Looking at the illustrations, its designs are a little peculiar—the controller would only have a control pad and a set of A, B, X, and Y buttons. The Switch and Switch OLED in handheld mode, as well as the Switch Lite and Switch Pro controller, have at least two joysticks. The controller could possibly make use of gyroscope-style control where moving it will act as movement on the screen, to replace the need for joysticks.

“Reading it more carefully, it could just be for a controller with flexible circuits and battery mounted on a “central” frame. The visuals might be based on the new N64 controller to make it easier to design a “blank” controller,” said fan Breno Angelotti on Twitter about the patent.

It doesn’t look like this patent means we will be seeing the release of a Nintendo Switch Pro, even though many of us are still holding on hope for it. I am at least expecting the Nintendo Switch to release something that could let us play with video games in 4K. Last year, developers were reportedly working on 4K games for the console, and this incredible-looking Harry Potter-related game will also be released on the Switch. It would be weird if Nintendo didn’t do anything about 4K content, but then again, Nintendo has usually gone against the grain.
