Here’s how you can protect your business’s data and keep costs down with a NAS

This post was brought to you by Synology.

As Malaysia moves ahead in its transition to an endemic phase, many companies and businesses continue to practice a hybrid model where staff can continue to work remotely. While big multinational corporations can afford to have a whole IT division, smaller and medium sized businesses typically don’t have this luxury.

As such, many of these companies who are moving to a work-from-home model have also had to deal with the challenge of managing their data that their staff will need to access remotely. For many of these small businesses, the first thing they probably turned to when making the switch to remote working are these free cloud storage solutions. However, these cloud storage solutions more often than not are meant for personal use only. They also don’t really come with a lot of storage. Small business owners may then consider switching to paid cloud storage solutions with a subscription fee.

However, this again brings up the matter of cost, as while these business-tier plans may not seem like much on a month-on-month basis, but when you factor in these subscription fees you’ll be surprised just how much you’re paying. For instance, a small company with around 50 users may sometimes end up forking over close to USD3,600 a year for a cloud storage solution with about 30GB of storage per user. Similarly, a medium sized business with around 200 users may opt for a file server instead, but that comes with even higher costs covering both getting the hardware for it as well as paying for the operating system and software licenses.

In contrast, the best storage solution for these small and medium businesses could actually be getting a network attached storage (NAS) instead. We’ve covered what a NAS is in greater detail before here, but the gist of it is that a NAS is basically a device with a large amount of storage onboard that’s connected to your local network. It’s like a warehouse of data that you and your staff can all use to store, share and access files that your company needs over the internet.

Synology wants to help you simplify your office workflow

With Synology’s NAS devices, you can scale your storage based on what your business needs, no matter how big or small. The person in charge will have the right to authorise the access of data and has full control of data access too. Even if it’s just a few of you working remotely, having a NAS ready makes it easy to coordinate you and your colleagues’ workflow. No longer will you need to squabble around the office just to get someone to send data over to you.

Furthermore, with a Synology NAS, you also don’t need to fork out for any expensive software licenses, as it comes with the Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM) operating system powering it. Synology DSM is lightweight, modular and can help users organise and protect your data intuitively without distraction. You’ll also be able to have access to tools like Synology Drive and Synology Office to help users access their files on the fly speedily and easily anywhere and anytime as long as you have an internet connection.

A NAS from Synology also ensures the safety of your company’s data by carrying out a daily backup task and will also provide users a notification with a detailed report once it’s done. By making it easy to use, access and upkeep, each employee can be trusted to restore their data with Synology’s flexible recovery option even without a dedicated IT team.
