Even after the hype died down a bit for Wordle, I’ve still noticed that it’s been trending every now and then on social media. For now, anyway… Wordle is here to stay—along with its other unofficial Wordle alternatives. Joining that list of Wordle alternatives is something called Heardle, a music-related puzzle game. But if you live in some regions, the game might not work for you on certain days.
If you’re still, for some reason, not familiar with Wordle, we’ve got you covered. It’s a simple game where you’d need to guess the five-letter “word of the day”. It gives you six chances to guess the word. Once you make a guess, it will give you feedback on the different letters so you can make a better guess on your next try.
For Heardle, on the other hand, you’d also have six chances to guess… but it’s for the “song of the day” instead. And instead of guessing the answer using letters, you’d need to hear about one second of the song’s intro at a time. If your guess is incorrect, you’re provided with additional seconds to work out the tune being played.
For music aficionados, Heardle might appeal to you greatly. Being able to guess a song in two seconds or less isn’t everyone’s forte. So, if you do guess the song correctly, you can also show your results off online—same as how you want to show off your results for regular Wordle.
I hope this isn’t too much of a spoiler, but the answer to today’s Heardle is a not-too-recent-but-recent-enough pop song that can be familiar to many millennials and Gen Z-ers. Heardle is also apparently filled with nostalgia-based tunes as its daily song choices.
However, it’s got a bit of a problem in some regions, including in Malaysia. On some days, Heardle refuses to play the track for the game. And that’s because the game uses Soundcloud—an online audio distribution platform—to play its tracks. Some SoundCloud Content Partners have the ability to select which territories they wish to have their content available in, depending on licensing rights. And usually, Malaysia (and other countries of course) gets the short end of that stick.
“If a SoundCloud member does not have the licensing rights to release a track everywhere, they may only make it available within the countries where they have the rights to do so. As a result, the track might not be available in certain regions,” says Soundcloud.
So, even though Heardle works on some days, including today, it might not work tomorrow—depending if the distributor of that song lets Malaysians access it. You can, however, keep going back to the site every day anyway to see if you’re allowed to play. Because it’s honestly super fun and satisfying to get the answer right.
