Honor Magic 4 series: Massive camera bumps, Snapdragon 8 gen 1 and 100W wireless charging

At the MWC 2022 event in Barcelona, just about everyone’s busy showing off their new devices and hardware for the year, and Honor is no different. They’ve revealed not one, but two new smartphones, which are the Honor Magic 4 and Honor Magic 4 Pro. Both are flagship level devices, and according to Honor CEO George Zhao was designed to ‘solve user pain points’.

Honor Magic 4 Pro specs

The Honor Magic 4 Pro is the higher spec of the two, and has a massive 6.81-inch, quad curved LTPO OLED display with a 1312 x 2848p resolution. It’s bigger than last year’s Honor Magic 3 Pro lineup and can also do an adaptive refresh rate up to 120Hz. The display is capable of 1000nits of brightness, covers 100% of the DCI-P3 colour gamut, has HDR10+ support and can produce up to 1.07 billion colours. It also has one of the highest pulse width modulation numbers seen on an LTPO display at 1920Hz. Incidentally, despite Honor’s advertising over its ‘iconic Eye of Muse’ symmetrical display, the Honor Magic 4 Pro isn’t actually symmetrical on the front as the front camera are offset to the left. It also kinda looks a little like the Huawei Mate 40 Pro at first glance.

Speaking of cameras, you’ll find a huge circular camera bump on the rear. It packs a triple camera setup with a 50MP, f/1.8 main camera flanked by a 50MP, f/2.2 ultra wide lens and a 64MP, f/3.5 periscope telephoto shooter. The front camera meanwhile has a single 12MP, f/2.4 selfie camera, with a Time of Flight sensor next to it for depth and biometrics. Another Time of Flight sensor is located on the rear camera bump as well. One new feature with the Honor Magic 4 series is the Honor Magic-Log Movie Master and AI Film Effects, bringing 10-bit log 4K video at 60fps.

Under the hood, you’ll find the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 system-on-chip mated to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage for local models, though up to 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage appears to be available elsewhere. It comes with Honor’s Magic UI 6 out of the box, which is based on Android 12. You’ll also be able to use Google Mobile Services on it. Honor have also introduced what they’re calling AI Super Rendering technology so that mobile gamers can get both a high frame rate with minimal latency while also generating less heat. Keeping the lights on meanwhile is a 4,600mAh battery with support for 100W Honor SuperCharge wired fast charging as well as 100W SuperCharge wireless charging. They claim that you can get a 100% charge in just 30 minutes when plugged in.

Other features of note include a dual security system for improved privacy, with an independent security chip for passwords and biometrics. There’s an AI powered call privacy feature too that directs sound to your ears to prevent audio leak. The fingerprint sensor meanwhile is Qualcomm’s own 3D Sonic Sensor Gen 2 that Honor says will be 40% faster than previous generation fingerprint sensors. There’s also support for 5G, NFC, Bluetooth 5.2 and WiFi 6. It’s been rated for IP68 dust and water resistance too. Despite being 9.1mm thick, there’s no 3.5mm audio jack though there will be stereo speakers. It’ll come in Black, White, Cyan and Gold, with Honor saying there’ll be more colourways to come.

As for local pricing and availability, the Honor Malaysia website does say that it’s coming soon to Malaysia and we can expect it here some time in Q2 of this year, though there’s still no word on the price. In Europe though, we do know that the Honor Magic 4 Pro will be priced at EUR1,099 (~RM5,121.61) for the model with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.

Honor Magic 4 specs

The base model Honor Magic 4 may not have the ‘Pro’ moniker but it still looks to be a pretty formidable device. It still has the same 6.81-inch, LTPO OLED display as its bigger brother, but has a slightly lower resolution at 1224 x 2664p. It also doesn’t get the quad curves of the Magic 4 Pro, instead making do with a dual curved display. The Honor Magic 4 has an adaptive refresh rate up to 120Hz with HDR10+ support, a peak brightness of 1000nits and all the other features the Honor Magic 4 Pro has.

In fact, just like the Honor Magic 4 Pro, it too has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 system-on-chip, with up to 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage available. Its rear camera bump is slightly smaller, but retains the same 50MP main camera and 50MP ultra wide camera. Where the Honor Magic 4 differs is in the telephoto shooter, with Honor swapping out the Magic 4 Pro’s 64MP camera for an 8MP, f/3.4 periscope telephoto camera instead. The front camera meanwhile is the same 12MP selfie shooter, though the Honor Magic 4 loses the ToF sensors on both the front and the back of the device.

You do get a slightly bigger battery with the Honor Magic 4 though, coming in at 4,800mAh though fast charging is lower at 66W only. It also loses out on the Qualcomm ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, instead using a regular optical under display fingerprint sensor. The Honor Magic 4 doesn’t have an IP68 rating either, instead only coming with an IP54 rating.

It doesn’t seem as though Honor Malaysia will be bringing the Honor Magic 4 to our shores, as only the Magic 4 Pro is currently listed on their website. The Honor Magic 4 will be available elsewhere though, starting at EUR899 (~RM4,191.76) for the model with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.
