TikTok is expanding its max video length to 10 minutes. Will this ruin the app’s appeal?

TikTok confirmed that it is starting to roll out the ability for users to upload videos up to 10 minutes in length. The expanded length will roll out to users globally over “the weeks ahead”.

Previously, TikTok introduced a 3-minute maximum length for a video last year. Before that, the limit was 60 seconds after initially expanding from just 15 seconds. As a TikTok user who’s noticed the changes over the years, I’ve not been a huge fan of the app extending the length so much as it would sometimes defeat the purpose of a casual scroll that I prefer.

I don’t really have the patience to watch longer TikTok videos, and would often skip them in favour of shorter ones. I would, however, wish that I could watch longer TikTok videos when I’m busy doing my nails or when I’m eating—something to watch hands-free.

“We’re always thinking about new ways to bring value to our community and enrich the TikTok experience. Last year, we introduced longer videos, giving our community more time to create and be entertained on TikTok… Today, we’re excited to start rolling out the ability to upload videos that are up to 10 minutes, which we hope would unleash even more creative possibilities for our creators around the world,” a spokesperson from TikTok said in a statement.

Introducing 10-minute limits on TikTok could mean more cooking demos, beauty tutorials, educational content, and comedic sketches. But this could also mean more opportunities for long-winded rant videos, and compilation videos of other videos—which… kind of sounds like the beginnings of YouTube, or just YouTube in general.

Despite TikTok’s video limit expansion, I don’t think it would change TikTok’s appeal. I can easily skip longer videos when I want to, and watch the content that I prefer. So, if a 10-minute video pops up, I can either skip through the video to watch the end or skip it entirely.

Although, my wish for an upcoming update for TikTok would be something to filter longer videos when I want to watch them, as it would help me go as hands-free as possible. Because scrolling through 15-second videos can sometimes be annoying if you just want to enjoy TikTok content when you’re trying to enjoy the app during breakfast.

Once the feature has been rolled out to you, you’d be notified through the app. You also need to ensure that you’re using the latest version of TikTok before trying out the feature.
