This robot can play Wordle better than you

The New York Times might have changed Wordle, but that hasn’t hindered the popularity of the game. Everyone and their mothers are playing it and that apparently includes robots.

Chris Greening from Atomic14 recently published a video showcasing his Wordle robot. The video contains a tutorial on how to make one yourself, using a 3D printer and a Raspberry Pi.

Using a 3D printer for this job is quite genius. It’s a robot that’s able to accurately move something according to what it sees, which is exactly what you need to automate Wordle. Greening combined the 3D printer with a stylus and a Raspberry Pi Camera which tells the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B what it can see.

Once the Raspberry Pi gets the visual information, it scans the image and locates the phone screen. After this, the robot is able to make the first guess and look at the colours to calculate the next word to guess.

The robot’s strategy isn’t the best, but it’s still able to play the game and win. It starts off with one of the top five best guesses as calculated by Greening. After this, it calculates all the possible words given the colour feedback and uses the word with the least number of follow-up guesses. In the video, the robot started with “raise” and was able to get the correct answer on its fourth try.

Getting the word right in four tries is not too bad of a performance and it’s definitely better than some Wordle players I know. If you’re interested in making your own Wordle robot, Greening kindly included his code in a Github repository, so you can follow along and do it yourself!

If you want to learn more about Wordle, we made a video covering everything you need to know about the game, so check it out if you’re interested!
