Apple will launch the M2 chip with brand new Macs this year, reports say

Bloomberg tech reporter Mark Gurman revealed that Apple would be releasing several new Macs with a new M2 chip later this year. The company will reportedly debut a 13-inch MacBook Pro, a Mac Mini, a 24-inch iMac, and a redesigned MacBook Air.

“Apple is entering part three of its end-to-end computer overhaul—a move that includes dumping Intel Corp. chips in favor of Apple Silicon,” wrote Gurman.

In 2020, Apple debuted their M1 chip for their Macs which promised a “superior performance” after using Intel chips. But according to Ray, who tried out the M1 13-inch MacBook Pro last year, the chip fell short in performance, and editing a 4K video “is just so torturous”. The M1 MacBook Pro is also only capable of games on low settings.

“The M1 is still new and there are a lot of improvements and upgrades that Apple needs to work on,” continued Ray in her review.

Now that the M2 is reportedly making its debut later this year, we can be optimistic and hope that it certainly will fix the problems the M1 had. According to Gurman, the M2 CPU will be “slightly faster” than the M1, and it will share the same eight-core architecture. Its graphics cores may jump from seven or eight to nine or 10. And in 2023, Gurman predicts that Apple may release the Pro and Max versions of the M2 chip—as well as announce an M3 chip.

Gurman also listed the new models expected to be released by this year:

  • A new Mac mini with an M1 Pro chip
  • A 13-inch MacBook Pro with an M2 chip, to succeed the 2020 model and sit below the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro in the line
  • A Mac mini with an M2 chip
  • A 24-inch iMac with an M2 chip
  • A redesigned MacBook Air with an M2 chip
  • A larger iMac Pro with M1 Pro and M1 Max chip options
  • A half-sized Mac Pro, the first with Apple Silicon, with the equivalent of either two or four M1 Max chips

While there’s no official information yet of what will be released and when they will be released, Gurman guesses that Apple “wants to debut that machine as early as the WWDC event in June and ship it in the fall”. He also thinks that a revamped MacBook Air might also be a good holiday release.
