The Nintendo Switch might not have Netflix, but it now has tons of anime through Crunchyroll

Fans of anime might be excited to find out that Crunchyroll is now available on the Nintendo Switch as a streaming app. It joins other streaming apps on the console like YouTube, Twitch, Hulu, and the Pokemon TV app.

Sure, the Nintendo Switch is mostly set up with my TV set as a way to play all my favourite video games on the big screen. But what I mostly use it for when I want to unwind is to open up the YouTube app through the console—and I would use the Switch even more if it has the ability to open up Netflix or Disney+ Hotstar. But I suppose adding Crunchyroll to the mix wouldn’t hurt if I wanted to try out some anime for free.

If you aren’t really familiar with Crunchyroll, it’s an online platform that lets users watch anime titles through a computer, iOS, Android, and other streaming devices and gaming platforms. You can sign up for free to stream content one week after the broadcast in Japan with ads, but with a premium account, you can watch content the same day—only an hour after airing in Japan.

While it’s a convenient addition to the Nintendo Switch, the console still falls behind other major consoles. Both the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X offers Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney Plus, among others. And yes, this includes Crunchyroll.

Nintendo Switch has been notoriously behind on features. It still hasn’t beefed up its newer console to let users play in 4K, while PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X have 4K capabilities.

But, if you’re like me, you didn’t get the Nintendo Switch for its incredible visuals and capabilities. You got it to play revamped versions of classic Pokemon games, and you’re more than okay with that. I just wish that the console could give us just a little bit more.
