When Microsoft debuted the Surface Pro 8 to the world in September of last year, they not only revealed their new 2-in-1 but also the Surface Laptop Studio, their most powerful laptop ever. It took them awhile to bring it to Malaysia though, as the Surface Pro 8 has finally become available for purchase here now, while Microsoft Malaysia have also announced that they’ve begun taking pre-orders for the Surface Laptop Studio.
You’ll be able to pre-order the Surface Laptop Studio from now onwards on the official Microsoft store on Lazada and Shopee as well as their authorised retail partners such as Gloo, Harvey Norman, PC Image and others. The pre-order period ends on the 8th of March, and for those who do pre-order you’ll be able to get a free USB-C Hub, a Surface Slim Pen 2. Those who pre-order the higher spec Surface Laptop Studio with the Intel Core i7 underneath will also get an additional Boomwave backpack for free, for a total of RM700 in freebies.
As for the prices and configurations available, here are all the models available for pre-order in Malaysia:
At first glance, you might not think that it’s a laptop, with its eccentric hinge design. However, the Surface Laptop Studio’s design actually seems inspired by Microsoft’s lineup of Surface Studio all-in-one desktops. The Surface Laptop Studio’s hinge also helps it transform into a tablet of sorts, as you can pull the display over the keyboard for when you want to use a stylus on it.
And speaking of the display, it’s a 14.4-inch, 3:2 PixelSense Flow display with a 2400 x 1600p resolution. It’s also capable of a 120Hz refresh rate, and has a contrast ratio of 1500:1. The screen also has support for touch input on top of stylus support such as the Surface Pen and Surface Slim Pen 2 with a place to store the latter under the keyboard magnetically. You’ll be able to set up the Surface Laptop Studio in any way you like, with the traditional Laptop Mode for full access to the keyboard and touchpad, Stage Mode where the display is pulled forward over the keyboard like an easel that would be great for presentations or watching content, and lastly Studio Mode where the display is completely over the display for a tablet-like experience.
Under the hood, you’ll find either the 11th Gen Intel Core i5-11300H or the Intel Core i7-11370H. These processors are actually based on the Intel H35 platform, meaning that they’re more like the low power 11th Gen Intel Core U-series CPUs that typically use around 15W to 25W, but clocked higher and with a higher 35W power consumption too. This gets mated to up to 32GB of LPDDR4X RAM and up to 1TB of SSD storage. You’ll also find an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti graphics card on the Intel Core i7 model, while the Core i5 configuration is limited to just its Intel Iris Xe integrated graphics.
Elsewhere, there’s a 58Whr battery rated for up to 19 hours on the Core i5 model and up to 18 hours on the Core i7 model. The Core i7 model also has a more powerful 95W Surface Power Supply while the Surface Laptop Studio with the Intel Core i5 under the hood only gets a 65W Surface Power Supply. As for I/O, it comes with two USB 4.0 ports with Thunderbolt 4 support, a 3.5mm audio jack and a Surface Connect port. There’s a 1080p webcam as well with Windows Hello authentication, on top of a quad-speaker setup featuring Dolby Atmos and a pair of built-in far-field microphones. Connectivity-wise, it supports WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1. The Surface Laptop Studio comes with Windows 11 Home out of the box and is available in just the Platinum colourway.
