After months of anticipation, the Samsung Galaxy S22 has finally arrived in Malaysia. For fans of the S Pen, the “Galaxy Note” returns in the form of the Galaxy S22 Ultra. If you want a quick rundown on what’s new, here are 10 things you need to know about the latest Samsung Galaxy S22 series in Malaysia.
Galaxy S22 Ultra is the new Note
Fans of the S Pen were left disappointed last year as there were no new Note models after the Galaxy Note 20 series. To fill the gap, Samsung had tried to integrate the S Pen experience on the Galaxy S21 Ultra and the Galaxy Z Fold 3, but nothing beats having a built-in S Pen like a true Galaxy Note device.
The new top-of-the-line Galaxy S22 Ultra is the first Galaxy S device with an S Pen that you can store in its dedicated silo. In addition, they have made the stylus better with even lower latency from 9ms to 2.8ms for a more natural feel. They have also improved the AI-assisted prediction technology which lets you draw more accurately. Even in terms of design, the S22 Ultra looks more like a Galaxy Note than your typical Galaxy S series. To learn more, you can check out post on the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s S Pen features.
Malaysia’s Galaxy S22 series is powered by a Snapdragon chip
If you’re looking for Snapdragon-powered flagship from Samsung, you’ll be happy to know that the Samsung Galaxy S22 series for Malaysia and the Southeast Asian region is using the Snapdragon 8 gen 1 chip instead of an Exynos 2200. It is worth noting that both 4 nm-based Snapdragon and Exynos options have similar CPUs but they differ in the graphics department. The Snapdragon chip uses an Adreno 730 GPU.
The Exynos 2200 chip by Samsung promises to deliver console-quality gaming as it uses AMD’s RDNA2 architecture as its backbone. The Xclipse GPU offers hardware-accelerated ray tracing and variable rate shading that are normally found on PCs, laptops, and gaming consoles. At the moment, the Galaxy S22 with Exynos 2200 chip is offered only in very selected markets which include Europe and the United Kingdom.
The Galaxy S22 is smaller than the iPhone 13
While the Galaxy S22 may look similar to the Galaxy S21, Samsung has actually reduced the screen sizes for both the S22 and the S22+ by 0.1 inch. This means the Galaxy S22 gets a 6.1″ screen while the S22+ now has a 6.6″ display. With thinner bezels, the Galaxy S22 is now slightly shorter and narrower than the 6.1″ iPhone 13. However, at 7.6mm thin, it is only 0.1mm thicker than the iPhone 13.
6% smaller batteries for S22 and S22+
As you would expect with smaller phones, the battery capacities for both the S22 and S22+ have been reduced from their predecessor. The base S22 now gets a 3,750mAh capacity which is down by 250mAh (from the Galaxy S21) while the S22+ gets a 4,500mAh battery which is a reduction of 300mAh (from the Galaxy S21+). Hopefully, the more efficient 4nm processor could provide more than adequate battery life despite the reduced capacity.
The Galaxy S22 Ultra still retains the same 5,000mAh battery capacity as the Galaxy S21 Ultra. Since this is a Note replacement, it is great that Samsung didn’t sacrifice on battery capacity despite having to make space for an S Pen.
Brightest display on a Samsung smartphone
Samsung’s Dynamic AMOLED 2X displays on the Galaxy S22 series now pushes an insane peak brightness of 1750 nits along with a contrast ratio of 3,000,000:1. That’s higher than the Galaxy S21 Ultra’s 1500nits peak brightness which is currently one of the highest in the industry. The device also gets a Vision Booster feature which takes in consideration the effects of ambient lighting on the display and applies necessary tweaks including contrast to ensure greater visibility with minimal glare under direct sunlight.
However, take note that the 1750 nits of peak brightness is only for the 6.6″ S22+ and the 6.8″ S22 Ultra. The base 6.1″ S22 settles for a lower peak brightness of 1300 nits. Across the board, all three models in the series support 120Hz refresh rate and a touch sampling rate of 240Hz in Game Mode. In terms of resolution, both the S22 and S22+ push Full HD+ (2340×1080 pixels) while the S22 Ultra gets a higher Quad HD+ (3080×1440 pixels) resolution.
For better screen durability, the S22 series gets a newer Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+, and it’s for both front and back. Yup, that also means that the base S22 no longer gets a plastic back like the previous Galaxy S21.
Improved low light photography with Nightography
The base Galaxy S22 and S22+ now get a triple-camera setup which features a higher resolution 50MP main camera, a 12MP ultra-wide-angle shooter and a 10MP telephoto camera that can do 3x optical zoom. Meanwhile, the S22 Ultra gets a quad-camera setup that has a 108MP main camera, 12MP ultra-wide-angle camera, 10MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom and another 10MP telephoto camera with a periscope module that offers 10x optical zoom. All main and telephoto cameras come with optical image stabilisation.
The biggest highlight for the series is its “Nightography” feature which allows you to capture better low light images while preserving the colours. This is made possible with larger image sensors and adaptive pixel technology. With Night Solution, the phone uses multi-frame processing where it captures several shots and uses AI to merge the best frames without noise and blur, to deliver a single clear low-light shot. The Night Solution feature is applicable not just for the main camera but also for portrait mode, telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom and also the front camera for selfies.
5 years of security updates, 4 major Android OS upgrades
Samsung is upping its game when it comes to software and security support. The Korean smartphone maker commits to providing five years of security updates and 4 major Android OS upgrades for the Galaxy S22 and other recent models. This is great news for those who want to hold on to their devices for an extended period of time and it’s even better than the Google Pixel 6 which only offers three major Android OS upgrades. Out of the box, the Galaxy S22 runs on Android 12 with One UI 4.1 and this possibly means that these devices could get upgraded all the way to Android 16.
45W fast wired charging, power adapter sold separately
Like any Samsung flagship devices, the charger is no longer included as part of their efforts to go green. The Galaxy S22+ and S22 Ultra supports 45W fast charging via USB-C, while the base Galaxy S22 settles for 25W fast charging. The original 45W power adapter from Samsung costs RM199 but you can probably find other third party USB-PD chargers that are more affordable. If you don’t like cables, the Galaxy S22 series also supports wireless charging at 15W.
In case you missed it, we have a special promo for SoyaCincau readers where you can redeem the 45W Travel Adapter for free when you pre-order your Galaxy S22 on Samsung Malaysia’s online store using the promo code GS22VIPSC.

For power users, the Galaxy S22 Ultra is offered with up to 1TB of storage. However, in Malaysia, Samsung Malaysia currently offers the S22 Ultra only in 128GB, 256GB and 512GB storage options. It isn’t clear if Samsung will bring the 1TB version later like it did for the Galaxy S10+ three years ago.
