It’s been just over a year since the Samsung Galaxy S21 series debuted—or just over a month if you’re counting the Galaxy S21 FE—and the Korean giant has since revealed their latest and greatest smartphone lineup, the Galaxy S22 series. If you’re here to know more about the Galaxy S22 Ultra specifically though, you’ll want to click here to read about it. However, stay tuned to know more about the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+.
Samsung Galaxy S22 specs
Kicking things off with the base model, it’s ever so slightly smaller this year, coming in with a 6.1-inch FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X display. It’s capable of a refresh rate up to 120Hz, has a touch sampling rate of 240Hz and has a peak brightness of 1300nits. You won’t find the classic curved edge display on the Galaxy S22 though. In comparison, last year’s Galaxy S21 has a 6.2-inch display and so is slightly bigger at 151.7 x 71.2 x 7.9mm, compared to the Galaxy S22’s 70.6 x 146 x 7.6mm dimensions. It’s certainly nice to see Android smartphones with a more ‘compact’ size again after years of bigger devices.
Under the hood, the Galaxy S22 will come with either the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 or their in-house Exynos 2200 system-on-chip, though Malaysians will only be offered the former. This gets mated to 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage. All of that gets put into a frame built out of something Samsung calls Armor Aluminum. As for the body itself, it gets a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+ on both the front and back of the device, and is IP68 rated too. It’ll also come with Android 12 out of the box via the One UI 4.1 skin.
In the camera department, you’re looking at a triple camera setup on the rear, with a 50MP, f/1.8 main camera with dual pixel autofocus. That gets flanked to a 10MP, f/2.4 telephoto camera with a 3x optical zoom and a 12MP, f/2.4 ultra-wide shooter with a 120° field of view. As for the front camera, you’ll find a 10MP, f/2.2 selfie shooter.
Perhaps due to the smaller display and overall smaller size, it somewhat disappointing gets a smaller battery too. A 3,700mAh battery keeps the lights on and you’ll be limited to just 25W wired charging and 15W wireless charging. You’ll be able to use it for reverse charging via Samsung Wireless PowerShare too. The Galaxy S22 also won’t come with WiFi 6E, instead just WiFi 6, but will still have 5G, Bluetooth 5.2 and Samsung Pay via NFC. There’s no charging brick in the box either, and there’s an under-display ultrasonic fingerprint scanner.
The Galaxy S22 will come in Phantom Black, Phantom White, Green and Pink Gold colourways. As for price, it’ll start at RM3,499 for the model with 128GB of storage, while the 256GB model costs RM3,699.
Samsung Galaxy S22+ specs
Keeping the same ‘Essential Design’ philosophy that Samsung is using with the Galaxy S22 series, the Galaxy S22+ is not just a larger version of the Galaxy S22 though. There are a number of choice upgrades here, including in the screen. The 6.6-inch, FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2x display is capable of a refresh rate up to 120Hz and a 240Hz touch sampling rate, and can reach a higher peak brightness of 1750nits. It’s smaller than last year’s Galaxy S21+ though, which had a 6.7-inch display.
Another upgrade the Galaxy S22+ gets is a higher wired charging rate. The 4,500mAh battery in it charges at 45W, as well as 15W wireless charging and reverse charging capabilities too. However, just like its smaller sibling, its battery is actually smaller than the Galaxy S21+ of last year, which had a 4,800mAh battery. You’ll also get WiFi 6E and Ultra Wide Band functionalities on the Galaxy S22+ , which the Galaxy S22 doesn’t have. That’s on top of 5G, Bluetooth 5.2 and Samsung Pay via NFC connectivity.
However, other than that, it’s pretty much the same as the Galaxy S22. This means the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 or Exynos 2200 chip underneath mated to 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage, One UI 4.1 and no charging brick in the box. Malaysians though can again expect to get Snapdragon-powered versions of the phone. You’ll also be getting the same triple rear camera setup with its main 50MP, f/1.8 shooter, the 12MP, f/2.2 ultra-wide lens and 10MP, f/2.4 telephoto camera on top of the 10MP, f2.2 selfie camera. Build wise, you’ll also get a Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+ layer on both the back and the front of the device, with an Armor Aluminum frame keeping it together.
The Samsung Galaxy S22+ starts at RM4,099 for the 128GB model, while the 256GB model costs RM4,299. They’ll be available in Phantom White, Phantom Black, Green and Pink Gold.
