Seen those weird squares on social media? Here’s why

I’ve seen quite a few people on Twitter posting ominous weird squares to the feed—with no context. Turns out, it’s about a fun little word-based game called Wordle. But what is the game, and why have people been posting it on social media?

I first started noticing a few users on my Twitter feed sharing green, yellow, and white squares as tweets. I didn’t think too much of it until a couple of my friends started posting them, too. It dawned on me that this is becoming a worldwide phenomenon, and I had to figure out what the hell this phenomenon is.

After a little digging through, I found that the little squares referred to how quickly a player could guess a word. Basically, Wordle is a simple word-based game that you can only play once a day. It’s also completely free to play, and can be very challenging.

“Guess the WORDLE in 6 tries. Each guess must be a five-letter word. Hit the enter button to submit. After each guess, the colour of the tiles will change to show how close your guess was to the word,” wrote Wordle on their site.

You can technically look for the “word of the day” on Google, but that would just take the fun out of it.

With every guess, you’d either get green or yellow tiles. Yellow tiles mean that you’ve gotten the right letter—they’re just not in the right place, while green tiles mean that you’ve gotten the letter and placement right. A grey letter means that those letters aren’t in the word at all. There can also be repeat letters in the words.

“The thing I like about it is that it’s short. Something like chess can take a long time but this one can take just a few minutes, and it is very mentally challenging and satisfying if you get it right,” said Redza, fellow SoyaCincau writer and an avid player of Wordle.

Wordle seems simple enough to grasp, but it can legitimately be difficult to do. I couldn’t solve the word on my first try, but they do give you the word when you fail.

The appeal of the game is mostly being able to show off how fast you’re able to solve the word. The less the amount of tries, the better. There are also TikTok videos of people being able to solve them quickly.

If you want to share your results on social media, there’s a share button after you solve the game. The squares will automatically show up on your post if you decide to share it—and you’re able to share your results on a variety of platforms including Twitter, WhatsApp, and even on your Notes app.

The game is so popular, there have also been multiple copycat versions of Wordle on the App Store. But they have since been removed.
