Fully vaxxed travellers entering Malaysia with a recent history of COVID-19 infection are exempted from quarantine

Malaysia’s Ministry of Health has announced new COVID-19 guidelines for incoming travellers where quarantine exemption can be granted to individuals with a recent history of COVID-19 infection. As announced by Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, travellers who have been recently infected with COVID-19 in the last 11 to 60 days and have completed their COVID-19 vaccination are not required to undergo mandatory quarantine.

However, these travellers are still required to go through COVID-19 RTK Ag screening in front of a government or private healthcare staff at the international entry point. Travellers who have not been fully vaccinated or have not been vaccinated are still required to undergo a mandatory 7-day quarantine at a designated quarantine centre. They are also required to perform COVID-19 RTK Ag screening as well.

The new guideline for fully vaccinated travellers who have contracted COVID-19 will take into effect from tomorrow, Thursday, 13th January 2022. Other fully vaccinated travellers without a history of COVID-19 infection are still required to adhere to the existing guidelines.

According to Khairy, the new guidelines are based on scientific data and evidence as well as the latest developments in other countries that have been dealing with travellers infected with COVID-19. Fully vaccinated travellers with a history of COVID-19 infections are required to provide proof of infection with a digital or printed lab test result in order to qualify for quarantine exemption.

Travellers previously admitted to hospital after contracting COVID-19 are required to provide a “Fit to Travel” letter issued by a healthcare practitioner at the hospital. For travellers who had isolated at home or at hotel instead of being admitted to hospital after getting COVID-19, they must conduct a COVID-19 RTK Ag at least two days before departing for Malaysia. Only those who are tested negative are allowed to continue with their journey.

Travellers entering Malaysia are reminded to adhere to the SOP set by the Ministry of Health. Khairy has also reminded all eligible fully vaccinated individuals to go for their booster shot to ensure optimal protection, avoid severe symptoms and other complications.
