The Xiaomi 12 and 12 Pro are launching next week, and this is their new flagship smartphone series that will run on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. Ahead of the launch event, we now get to see the rear design of the Xiaomi 12 which reveals a rather minimalistic appearance thanks to serial leakster Evan Blass.
Among the two models, the Xiaomi 12 is dubbed as their compact flagship. As shown in the leaked images, the rear gets a triple-camera setup that consists of a large camera lens and two smaller shooters, that are housed in a raised camera bump module. From the label, we can confirm that the Xiaomi 12 features a 50MP main camera, which on paper looks like a downgrade from the 108MP camera on the Xiaomi Mi 11 and 11T series. However, we reckon that Xiaomi may feature a larger image sensor with bigger pixels which would produce greater detail and better low light performance.
Besides a typical glass back, it appears that Xiaomi would also release a “vegan leather” version of the Xiaomi 12 as pictured above. This would provide a more grippy back with its faux leather texture. In terms of display, the Xiaomi 12 comes with a 6.28″ screen that curves on both edges and it still features a centre-aligned punch-hole selfie camera at the top.
Despite having a not so “mini” screen, Xiaomi says the 12 has a narrower width of 69.9mm, which is more compact than the iPhone 13 that has a width of 71.5mm. The iPhone 13 comes with a smaller 6.1″ display but it is still slightly shorter. However, it is still slightly wider than existing compact Android flagship contenders with the ZenFone 8 having a width of 68.6mm, while the Xperia 5 III‘s width is 68mm.
According to company, the Xiaomi 12 will feature their smallest and highest-density 5G board which uses a new structure and stacking approach while featuring a 2600mm² vapour chamber cooling system. The device will also feature Xiaomi’s highest density battery that supports fast charging technology.
So far, there are no images of the rear of the Xiaomi 12 Pro which is said to offer more flagship features and a larger 6.73″ display. Xiaomi has just dropped a teaser claiming that the 12 Pro will be the first device to be equipped with a second-generation low-power 2K display. Besides having more advanced materials, the display claims to have a new intelligent dynamic refresh rate technology that can automatically turn down the display refresh rate from 120Hz to 10Hz on the fly when there’s no interaction on the screen. Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun also revealed that the device has received an A+ rating by DisplayMate.
The Xiaomi 12 series is launching in China at 7.30pm on 28th December 2021. We probably expect Xiaomi to release the device internationally including in Malaysia sometime in Q1 2022.
